My '92 is stock right now (21cm housing) and the spool up is spooky slow.

The truck just cruises empty 99. 9% of the time and I'm not looking for big horsepower, I just want it quickly. Soooooo... . I'm thinking I have this nice HY35 out of my friends '01. 5, would this be the fastest spooling turbo i could get (cheap) ??

Would the 9cm housing hurt the fuel economy?

I'd like to have it spool as fast as my '04 :-laf:-laf Ok, almost as fast.

The cheapest and easiest thing to do is just change the exhaust housing to a 16 cm one. It will spool up quicker but of course you will get a little bit more heat. Shadrach

Thanks,

I have read that the 16cm housing is a great upgrade for the H1C. I guess the question would be will the HY35 spool noticeably faster (with stock power) than the H1C with the 16cm housing?

I always figured when I upgraded my 91. 5's 21cm housing I'd go with either a non-wastegated 14cm housing for the H1C or else find a used HX35 wastegated 12cm housing.

Any problems with either of those? PS: Its a stock truck.

From what I have read the 14cm with no wastegate might get hot if you load the truck or turn up the fuel. The HX35 will work, you just need to fab up a new downpipe.

Still learning this stuff,

I was up to 38 psi and 330 hp to the ground with my Hx35 and 14 cm housing. It takes quite a bit to get it to run too hot. I had tried 12,14,16 and the original 21 cm housing. Hands down the 14 was the best. If I had known they made a non-gated 14 at the time I would had bought it.
