Dodge's "tough guy" image not so manly???

Found DEAD on HWY...

Hey guys,

The other day and again this evening my father-in-law was asking me what I know about the Furd super dutys. Now I admit to not knowing much,I have read all sorts of things saying that the 6. 0 litre engine is a piece of &^%$. Now my father-in-law owns a 95 cummins 3500 extended cab 4wd that is stripped of any and all options. He pulls a 30 something foot 5th wheel with it and likes it but would like air conditioning,a manual transmission, and extra doors. So he called my tonight from a furd dealer asking me about a 03 6. 0 litre crew cab SD w/1800 miles on it. I told him to hang up with me and walk,no run out of the place and never look back. The truck screamed buyback to me. WHat do you guys think?

He also said he was heading up the road to look at a 01 3500 club cab dodge w/the 24 valve cummins. Now I have no idea of the transmission combo in that one but it has to be a better buy than the furd right?

You guys should also know he is/was a ford guy his whole life until i started dating his daughter, and was around with my dodges. Then he shows up one day with his 95 3500. Then a few years later I was driving an old beat up 89 F150 because i need the extra seat with my son and all. Then I got smart again, and said screw it I want a 1st gen dodge again w/a cummins. I went and got it and put a bench in the rear. Way better than that 5. slow i had in the furd. Sorry to be long winded.

A few weeks ago returning home from AK I spent a night in a small truck stop in a small town in SD. Next door to the truck stop was a joint Ford/Dodge dealership. Walking my dog and exercising myself I happened to walk by a new Ford SD with an odd-looking window sticker. I stopped and read it. It was a federally-mandated disclosure statement informing potential buyers the truck had been bought back by Ford and repaired.

My guess is that a fairly large number of those early 6. 0s that Ford had to buy back ended up on dealer lots. Each to his own but I wouldn't buy one at a 50% discount from MSRP.

Anyone seriously considering the purchase of a low-mileage late model Ford SD should inquire if the truck was the subject of a buyback.

The Navistar/International 6. 0 is, in my opinion, a poor compromise for a truck engine even if it has been made reliable.

If I am not mistaken, I believe that Mr. Ford had to go down from the 7. 3 to the 6. 0 because they could not make the emmisions mandate from good old Uncle Sam. I do know that if you do a search of the Ford forums, there is alot of griping about the hit and miss of the new engine. The die hards will say that everyone is crazy and that there is nothing wrong with the new Fords. It is curious though that Mr. Ford has been buying back allot of his own product. Not badmouthing here, just find it interesting. I would parouse through some of the Ford forums and do a little reading before I jumped into buying one. Good luck and trying to keep him on the right side of the tracks:D ;)

I test drove an 04 6. 0 ford 6 speed a few months ago (I was just wasting some time, wasn't actually considering one) and it was a very disappointing truck to me. it has no low end power compared to my 97 (this was before any mods too). The best power was 2800 plus rpms and even that wasn't real exciting. Make sure your father-in-law test drives the truck empty and with the trailer he pulls before he buys a ford.

I agree with the previous statement any Dodge/Cummins would be better than a ford 6. 0.

I have put 42,000 miles on my company truck, a 2003 F350 4x4 6. 0 six speed 3:73 gears. The low end power or lack therof is extremely frustrating when empty let alone when towing. I must start out in low gear every time unless pointed downhill. Everything else about the truck is fine but it is like a Kawasaki Ninja . No power until 1800 rpm than it,s fine. I compare this truck to my 2001 H/O and the previuos work truck whcich was a 99 7. 3 PSD (great truck). If your father in law would like to ask any other questions tell him to feel free to e-mail me. -- email address removed --

Well guys on Wednesday July 14th my father-in-law came home with a new to him 03 Dodge 3500 SRW quad cab 4WD 5 speed truck in brilliant black. We had to scramble to get his fith wheel hitch into the truck before we left for vacation on saturday morning. The truck is beautiful, and rides way nicer than his old 95 dually. It seems to be the SLT package with some other options. The one thing I don't understand is that power wise it doesn't feel like it has a whole lot more power than my truck (92 D250 CC 2wd).

Now my truck has dynoed at 205 RWHP so I know it has more power than stock but I would think this 24V would have much more than 200 RWHP. Am I missing something? Now I am not saying its a dog but I have driven my friends 01 24V 6 speed reg cab 2wd,and that truck accellerates much better than the 03 my F-I-L has now. Is this truck maybe not a high output engine model?Excuse me if I am ignorant, but I just don't know much about the 24 valve models. We could not see anywhere like on my valve cover that lists hp. Nor could we figure out why it had a 5 speed. I thought all the new 24 valvers(aside from the old 5 state ones)were 6 speeds. Oh yeah this truck was originally purchased in RI(not one of the 5 states).

Chris

Sounds like he has a SO. I don't think the HO was available with a five speed. This would make sense given your comment about the '01 HO.

Dave

The HO only came with a 6 speed. There are differences with the turbo and the pistons along with the VP. The 5 speed will have the Dana 70 where the 6 speed has a Dana 80. His stock HP will be 235 vice 245 for the 6 speed and TQ if I remember will be around 460 vice 505 for the HO. So there are some differences. Nothing that can't be overcome with a little planning and proper bombing. ;)

Mundgyver,

You'd be correct if it was an '02, but its an '03. 250/460 vs. 305/555 in '03. No Dana's either! You can still make it up with bombing, but it'll take a little more to get there.

Dave

AH you are correct, I had my 01 on the brain. He would have general axles in it also then. But then the difference is still there between the SO and the HO. I'm just glad he made a good choice and went with a proven engine design. Not taking anything away from the Ford, but I don't recall hearing about any of them making 400,000 + in the recent past. ;)

Mundgyver, thats cause you haven't listened. Just back from one of the ford forums. The ford has no issues over there. I don't know how we get by with our little six cylinders.

Yep your right:D These little ity-bity six's have a tough time keeping up with them Fords. Course when I am moving up over Santiam Pass at 55mph going to Bend, Oregon at a GVW of 23,000 lbs cause I got a my little shortbed six banger weighed in at 10,000 on those little shrimpy axles that Dodge gave me and the 26 ft gooseneck trailer is at 13,000 on it's axles, yea I guess I kind of got to envy them and the Dura-mix guys when the come cruising by at 65 with no load.

Sure makes me want to have 2 more cylinders, even though I was only getting 14 mpg on that run.

Bring-em on:D I like matching loads with them Furds and Chuvy's. Pound for pound, I'll stick with my little six, and beside, I like Garnet Red:D

I would attach a pic of that load, but every time I try to put a pic on the board, I have trouble with it. But I can email it to anyone who wants to see it. :D

I had a 03' SO SRW 3500 before my 04'

Since it is an 3500 - the rear end is the same as the HO

I would of kept it if it would of had the 5 speed instead of the 47re which (in my opinion) seamed to defuel when in OD. Plus I wanted an exhaust brake.

It was the best riding and handling truck that I've ever owned - he will be very happy with it.
