Lost a Tread !!!!!!

Next Generation Ram

My father n law has a 84 Dodge Ram 4x4 with 360 gas engine. The truck itself has over 200,000 on the od. This thing has been rode hard and put up wet way too many times. If it were mine, I'm not sure that I would spend the money to make the phone call to have the wrecking yard tow it off. But he is bound and determined to keep this thing. Now comes the hard part. The carb. is the orginal Thermo Quad that came on the truck and has not been completely rebuilt to my knowledge. A shop added some parts to it for some reason but it still needs serious help. I told him to call Summit and get a new Edlebrock ThermoQuad, the problem is it needs to have all the Ca. emissions and they wont guarantee that it will pass the smog test. He would rather put a new one on it instead of a rebuild...

Does anyone know of where we can get a new carb or a great rebuild. Also he has done a number on the front rotors and they are too far gone to turn...

This thing needs help... ... .

Thanks

Rick

P. S. We found a window sticker while on vacation that would fit real well in the window. . it said. . 'My Other Vehicle is a Piece of Junk Too'...

Yup!

Call Mopar in Indiana and tell them what your problem is. They will probably recomend a replacement Holley as they did me. About $500. 00 and it will run well. There is a guy in Westminster California who could make a Thermoquad run like it should. He was at Stinger Ignition there. Might give them a call too.

thermoquads are hard to get right due to the phanolic mid section that is most propably warped, are you in an smog impact county??. your best bet is to pick up another one at the bone yard

i saw way too many good carb shops unable to get those carters to work.

klenger

Its a carburator(spelling) on a gas 4x4. .

ol ron

Got any numbers for these guys?

Uncle Joe

Yes we are. . we are 40 miles south of Fresno in Visalia. That center section was also my concern. Like I said it has over 200,000 on it and ready for some serious help. .

Rick

I knew that. I got rid of my last carburated vehicle in 1994 and was glad to be done with them. Fuel injection works so much better and more reliable.

Got one

I have a Carter AVS rebuilt and sitting in the garage. If you still want one,I will sell it for a whole ten bucks. Don't have any use for it. It came off of a 440,I rejetted it for lean burning primarys. It might pass emissions, but if it doesen't your only out ten bucks. I don't know how it could pass anyway. I did away with all the the smog stuff on my 84... ... . Drop me a line at

Rick,

Any chance of parking it on a train track when he's not looking? Then you should be able talk him into buying a real truck.

Thermoquad magic

Geez, it's been too long for me to remember, or even have record of the phone there. Come to think of it, it was called Midway City, not Westminster. This guy modified my Thermoquad, and did a number on my distributor, which together made it a really good performer. 1980 Z28's did not have a chance, no BS here!

I think, all things considered, if you cannot find this guy, put a Holley from Mopar on it. They are great guys to talk to and deal with.

I know this sounds crazy, but if you want to keep the Thermoquad(I personally think it is the best carb ever designed) send it to Holley. They will take just about any carb and make it brand new again, Mopar Action did this a couple of years ago with an old competition series and it came back replated and absolutely perfect. My 2 cents though, put on a holley 2 bbl fuel injection kit. The cost is down to about $600 and it is really easy to install. We put one on my friends 87 360 powered truck and it runs great. Is up to 15 mpg also, starts instantly, no vapor-lock, just like a newer fuel injected vehicle.

Jeg's

A buddy of mine and I had done some work on his '72 Charger. He had a 383 with 440 heads on it. Very nice engine. Anyway, we had a Holley on it and it ran like crap. From what all the mopar guys around here told me, mopars don't run well with holleys. The Thermoquad (Carter) is the way to go. Edelbrock (since they have Carter now) is also a good alternative. I found him a good second gen TQ and he got the rebuild kit from Jeg's. The only thing that was needed that wasn't in the kit was the choke pull-off. One trip to a bone yard and it was ready to go. Let me tell you, this thing really screams now. (I think the book we had said they were rated for 900cfm)

I guess my point is, give Jeg's a call. They may have what you are looking for. And as for emmissions, I don't think you'll have a problem if you get the carb running right.
