As you may have read, the throttle cable may fray at the fuel pump end in as little as 30-50K miles and there is an upgraded cable as a replacement. Mr. Frank Borris, Safety Defects Investigator with the NHTSA is investigating this defect and needs more sample cables that are frayed. If you have or will be changing your cable, he will provide a shipping label so you can send your old cable to him. His phone # is 800 986-9678 x 68089 e-mail Frank. Borris@nhtsa. dot.gov. This cable has caused some WOT sticking and his work may result in a recall and save someone from getting into an accident. Inspect your cable, and "Happy Ramming" Dave Hauser
PS mine went out at 49000 mi.

I almost went into the ditch today #ad
thanks to that no good P. O. S. I'd be happy to send him my cable that I just finished replacing. I hope DC recalls both throttle cable AND the fuel tank sending unit. Yes, that too went bad recently #ad

Well, I have a new one in my hands right now, and am gonna try to change it out this weekend if I have the time and help (you know who you are). At least it comes with detailed directions. How long, and how hard is it to change this out? It will get sent out in the mail after it is done to Borris. PS I have 73,000 miles and it has been getting ugly for a while, just lazy like Papa Joe and fuel filters.

BTW. . I was amazed at the knowledge of the parts guy at Twin Cities Dodge in Lafayette, IN. I told him I needed a throttle cable. He asked me what is was for, he grabbed a pen and paper and I said a 96 3/4 ton ram with a cummins. He go to the 96 part and walked away. He was back almost as fast as HVAC can run the 1/4 mile with one in his hand. This guy is realy good, or there are that many bad rams running around here.

Sixkill, my fuel gauge has been dead for a year and a half.

Jeff, the parts guy isn't fast, the fact is that every 12 valve that hasn't had it's cable replaced will need it eventually, they probably have a pallet of them in the back room. That's why there needs to be a recall.

The cable install takes about a half hour if you pay close attention to the position of the torsion spring on the throttle lever BEFORE you remove it. It goes back on in the wrong position much easier than the right position. I'd even suggest taking a picture of it unless there's another 12v close by that you can look at. Needle nose vicegrips make getting the spring on much easier.

Bill,

That sounds like the voice of experience! Gotta watch out for getting a black fingernail from that spring too. Don't ask how I know that! #ad

Took me two hours to replace by myself by the directions. It's frustrating if you do it by yourself. I'm not a contorsion artist by any means. There is another thing to consider. There are two different replacement bellcranks. One has a larger hole where it is held on the shaft. I have the automatic transmission and I needed a small bore bellcrank. It took me TWO trips to the dealer to get it right. They did not have any info as to which bellcrank was for what application. #ad

On another note, I called Frank Borris at NHTSA today. He deffinetly wants my cable. Guys, if you've had or replaced your cable yourself, give him a call. We need to give him ALL the info he needs to present his case for us. He was even aware of the bucking problem due to linkage problems w/ 5 speed. I also told him of my now existing WOT problem. (this has got me stumped, I don't get WOT #ad
) Make sure you call DC as well. They aren't going to do anything if we just bend over and keep buying these parts.
