The new Rifle that I have been paitently waiting 6 weeks for just arrived at the dealer today, and now the FBI has me in a hold status. Turns out the instant background check isnt so instant when you are buying a military sniper rifle. There is absolutely nothing in my background that would disqualify me from owning this or any other weapon. I used to be a Dallas PD officer, and am now on active duty military status. Because of this I have a file at the FBI, and since they have something to look at, this might be delaying the approval.

On one hand I feel good that the FBI is digging deep. Lord only knows that I hope they would handle a background check for a rifle that is accurate to 1000 meters different than a . 22 plinking rifle. I only hope that the delay doesnt go into this weekend. I guess my reloading and rifle competitions are on hold also :(

Anyone else been put on a hold status when purchasing a gun?

OH Well... here is a picture of it since this is the best I can do now... Updates to come.

The rifle in the Pic is the Carlos Hathcock signature series "Whitefeather" M1A (. 308). We sell them in my store, i have sold several of them recently but maybe its different in CT, but there is no restrictions on a gun based on its purpose (with the EXCPETION of the assult weapons list). In other words, you have the rifles and shotguns that anyone can buy who is age 18 and older, and Class 3, which covers Full Auto weapons, Silencers and certain other exotic wepons.

We stock pretty much all the Springfield M1A rifles, the GI Version, the match target/loaded version, the M1A/M21 sniper rifle and the Whitefeather like yours. They all fall into the same catergory as "long guns". In other words, Your gun, a Stoner SR15, a Barrett M99, and Ruger 10/22 are all the same as far as the state is concerned. Anyone who wants one only needs to be 18, and either wait 14 days, or if they have a hunting licence, there is no wait at all, pay and go. There is no such thing as a "Sniper rifle" in CT, its just a regular rifle, what you do with it is irrelevent. The only time the FBI is ever involved with anything is for class 3 sales.

I sold a Stoner SR25 (which next to the H&K PSG-1 is the most accurate semi auto . 308 rifle in the world) to a 19 year old with a hunting licence. No wait at all, he paid and left. Is Texas really that bad?

P. S. i have the Springfield Night Vision mount for the M1A rifle brand new if you want it, i did not need it for mine.

JConley, sorry to hear your situation.

My brother had a situation in Colo a couple years back where his records became messed up (basically charging that he had a felony arrest at a Fort Hullabird, MD). As you and most other military can attest there was never such a place. After much teeth grinding it was finally cleared. Probably just a bureaucratic slowdown, I have read in NRA publications many times that the instant background check was authorized, yet never really funded (basically anti-gunner efforts to discourage the honest gun buyer).

Hopefuly they are waiting to send your IRS rebate to buy more Diesel and ammo before clearing the purchase.

"A mighty fine lookin riflegun" as Alvin York (Gary Cooper) would say.

My experience with the instant checks is that they are not always instant, I wouldn't sweat it, typical Govt. run operation IMHO. My quick check for my M1A went right through, waited a while for another quick check for a sporting shotgun, go figure. I believe the wait has more to do with their work load than what you are purchasing, in fact, I don't believe that they even ask to what you are purchasing, other than rifle, shotgun, handgun. Good things come to those that wait, I'm way jealous, by the way. Did you ever see the video that Carlos made ? Pretty cool stuff, very humble man.

Whitefeather is and will always be the most disipline man I ever met. I met him at Quantico just before he died. He is a hell of a guy. Poor guy had been burn up so bad in Viet Nam that his skin scars would crack and bleed when he bent to much. He is the best that ever looked through a unertal and pull the M40 trigger

I've been told that every time they get a new person to train, they get all flustered with all the info, and "automatically" put it on hold.

They get new people all the time. You'd think they would have credible(and maybe better payed?) people doing something like this, but it seems as though there is a very high turn over rate. :(

Yea, I'm jealous too... ..... :D

Curt, you are very lucky man to have met him, wish I could say the same. Semper Fi Sir !!!!! How is Ok. these days ?

How much does this rifle cost? I wouldn't mind having one.

If you don't want to post the cost, please email me the cost.

NFR!!!!!!!!!! (nice fricken rifle!)

Can you get your hands on some M852 ammo? The DODIC/NALC is A171. This stuff is MADE for the M1A/M21D. It be an old friend to your new Whitefeather.

That'd be like buying deisel for your Cummins!!!!!!

If not email me for a recepie to duplicate it. Do you have the Special Weapons and Warfare pub? That has the components broke down ie: 168gr SMK, 44gr of IMR4895, LC (Lake City Ammunition Plant) Match brass... and my . 02 that LC-Match brass actually sucks. Most Camp Perry guys are using good 'ol LC-brass from M-60 ammo (A131).

This is all off the top of my head. I haven't shot competitively for years. My goal was to become distinguished in both rifle and pistol but the budget cut backs nixed to whole competitive shooting program. Still have tons of leg points but never finished what I started... Nothing like iron sights at 1000yds!

I have and feed a number of . 308's (yeah, yeah, 7. 62 x 51mm and all that) and have tons of data (both interior and exterior balistics) if you need any info...

EMD. I sent you an E-Mail. I need a good scope for this thing. I am looking at either the Leupold, or the Burris. Whatever I get, I want a mil dot reticle with as much magnification as I can get. I also need some 20 round mags since this came with a 10 round  Just out of curiosity, what do you sell the M-25 for???

Big Bob

Here is the place where I bought mine. They were great to work with and always returned my phone calls. If you have police or military background, you can get a couple hundred off the advertised price. http://www.cqbproducts.com/M25.htm

Ramalama

I am reloading my ammo as of now. If I start shooting with the National Guard shooting team, I could get unlimited ammo for free. I have some friends on the team, so I will join them in a month or so at one of the practice sessions. They want to shoot this as much as I do. I bought 1000 rounds of Lake City once fired brass for $65. 00 from this company http://www.scharch.com/proc-brass.htm The brass looks great, and is ready to load. I got the bullets from this guy http://www.gibrass.com/projectiles.html I bought 100 150gr ball for breaking in the rifle and general plinking. I also bought 200 rounds of 173gr M118 bullets. The bullets that I got dont have one mark on them, and they look fantastic!! This is the cheapest that I have found bullets and brass. I am using Varget powder for the moment. Whenever I get the Rifle  I will see how these things fly compared to the Palma Match, and the Sierra 168gr BTHP.

EMD, It is not bad here in Texas. The back ground check takes 3 mins. to 3 days. That is what the FBI calls instant.

We have found out that if a person is delayed that they will usually aways be delayed. If it goes thru the first time they will always go thru without any delay. We do not have to get the State to do the check. Just call NICS and do what they say. Just like you said. The only thing the govt. knows about what kind of gun the person is buy is Handgun or long gun. They do not know if it is a semi, bolt or single shot.

M118 good stuff!

The M118 is called "special ball" magic stuff when loaded by LC. I know you just bought the bullets but if you find some M118 as a whole cartridge give it a try. Those 173's make a great "poor mans" substitute for the 175gr Palma SMK (sierra match king). They are easily made to the same standards.

Varget is the powder of choice for all my . 308s. Mostly out of ease of use. I'm sure you've tried IMR 4895 (150gr) and 4064 (168-180gr) and loved how it shot but hated how it meters!!!!! IMR is the benchmark that all other rifle powders are compared. I just hated working with the stuff!

As I see you know, you bought THE brass. I'm sure your head stamp reads LC-89 or LC-91 etc. THAT's the stuff. You stole it at 65 bucks for a thousand pieces. Too cool. If you're hard core enough, you could cull them by headstamp. I'd even cull by weight!

Not sure what your competition allows for scopes. Leupold is the best scope for the money. If your budget allows, check into the Shepherd. They calibrate it for different . 308 loads and is hands down the best rangefinding scope. Stupid expensive though.

Learn your rifle's OAL (chamber over all length - hope you take delivery of it soon) With all the other typical variables handled with handloads, experimenting with bullet OAL will make the biggest difference down range.

My theory is this: Winchester's BOSS allows you to tune a barrel's harmonics to a cartridge - while handloaders have been tuning catridges to a barrel's harmonics for a 100 years.

After break in, have fun but watch your heat. Barrels can be ruined in a matter of minutes. Varmint hunters are notorius with burning up barrels. Semi autos make it all to easy as well.

My rifle is 2000 rounds old now yet the BEG (bore errosion guage) says new. You know why? Never shoot a hot barrel. A hot barrel is when spit sizzels off. If it just steams off with no boiling you're ok. (the famed "Spit test" half inch fwd of the origin of the rifing)

Man you got your ducks in a row. Sounds like you'll do that rifle justice. Sure wish I could be there to watch it shoot. :D

I have talked to SWFA. I will have to take the M-25 for a road trip up to the Dallas area and check out some optics... . ah..... wait a minute... . I cant have it yet because the FBI still has me in :p status.

Have you used, or do you use factory crimp dies with your 308? I tested out some 223 reloads, and my shot groups were better with the factory ammo. I think one of the things that threw off my accuracy with these reloads (in addition to a number of things that I dont have time to list) was the inconsistent pressure due to the lack of a crimp. I bought a 223 and a 308 lee factory crimp die. I havent been back to the range to test the crimped ammo out. Just curious if you had any experience with these.

NO BUT...

The Lee factory crimp die is just what the doctor ordered for those of us shooting semi-autos. You are right on track. All the guys at "Perry" have to compete with factory stuff but we can practice with what ever we have. The Lee Factory crimp die is the only thing out there to keep a semi-auto fm beating your hand loads up.

It's has nothing to do with start pressue. Wait, let me start over. Out to 300yds it has got nothing to do with start pressure and everything to do with the semi-auto action beating the cartridge up. Namely, bullet seat and it's concentricity gets knocked off - extract a chambered round (a round that's been chambered by the action and not a first round from loading) and roll it on a flat surface. The bullet will wobble. Check OAL. It'll be short. As you already know the good 'ol Lee F. C. D. will eliminate it. To absolultley duplicate MILSPEC ammo you have to use a sealer as well. Ever kineticly(sp?) pull the bullet from MILSPEC ammo? The bullet will have that weather seal paint (not nail polish, it really is paint) so does the primer. That also helps make the factory loaded cartridge so tough. The MILSPEC is for water immersion. They sell that paint as well but you'll go mad trying to nail everything down.

What do I do? Well, shooting the All Navy (I'm CG) we had to use military ammo so my hand loads were only for practice. I'd just single load them to set up some preliminary sight dope. Once the match started, we all had to shoot M852, which I know I've said is the best factory match ammo in the world. My hand loads will shoot as well or better but only when single loaded. An empty mag locks the action on every round, start the next in the chamber, release the bolt, squeeeeeeze...

The strings of fire for Any Rifle - Any Sight matches are geared for bolt guns so you can single load your semi for that.

My dies are Dillon and are similar to the Lee but I admit, a true Lee factory crimp die does the best neck tension crimp. Best there is next to a roll crimp.

The best thing is, what's that Lee FC die sell for now? 15bucks?

It'll work and it's worth a try.

My bolt gun is the STEYR SSG PII. I'm cheating though cause I have Leupold's 24x BR on it! Set a personal best in '93 with it at 300 yards. Shot 7/8th of one inch. Thats . 279 minute of angle. Did that with my hand loads. At 100 yds we shoot with movable backers to prove we shot three rounds. The Bench Rest guys use movable backers out to 500yds! Those rail guns are insane!

My others are an M21 (springfield), M77 (ruger), and a HK-91. The HK as all the finess and finer workings of a Mack Truck!!

Ian.

Side note 'cause I gotta know-

Are you measuring OAL fm the bullet tip or the bullet's ogive with a comparator? I use the comparator fm Stoneypoint. You'll go mad without it. Just wondering.

By far the best thing to do is to get your Concealed Handgun License, Then there is no FBI check. No waiting period. End of problem

I have it!!! I got the call this morning, and I picked it up this afternoon :D

I agree that the consealed weapons permit is the ticket to avoiding this delay.

Ram. I have only loaded 25 loads for break in, so I used OAL from the bullet tip. I will have to look into the comparator for doing the match rounds. I did notice the trim length of the LC brass is not very consistent. Kinds hard to get a good crimp on the 147gr rounds when the caneluor (sp) isnt in the right spot

hey Jconley,

I've had an FFL for over 20 years and the people in every state have to get approval from the same people at NICS whether there is a Point of Contact state number or not. Like was said before, the NICS check only knows whether or not it is a long gun or handgun, no makes and models are asked for. The check is extremely simple and only takes a couple of minutes. Since the original bugs were worked out of the computer system, I have never had to wait for any incompetent person on the other end, they have a very short list of questions to ask, and everyone are asked the exact questions. They cannot deviate from these "fixed" questions. They do not know the AK sales from the M1A's, from the flattop AR's from the Yugo 48's. Delayed responses are mainly due to someone else having the exact name as the one being called in. One way to get around this, and many people do not want to use it, is to voluntarily give your SS# when the NICS person asks for it. I have never had a delay when using a SS#.

The NICS has a customer service number that any FFL holder may call and find out why there was a delay. After 3 business days if you do not hear anything from your "delay". you can buy the gun.
