Is anyone running flares? I asked my buddy about his he was running and he took them off due to the fenders beginning to rust.

If I do get some, should I caulk or seal the seams or not? I am not sure which brand he had.

TIA, Nick

Nick,

I have heard of the issues of FFs and rust, but I never knew anyone to actually have problems. Although it seemed logical I though it was all BS. I guess I look at all the Chevy's out there with FFs and I don't see any of them really rusting out around the flares.

The Xenons and OEM attach with 3M tape all the way around so I don't think they would let too much crud in.

I was thinking about the Bushwacker brand. After I get new wheels and bigger tires of course.

Thanks for the reply!

Nick

I put a set of Bushwackers, the OEM style, on my fathers last truck before he sold it. I would not buy them again. They were flimsy as compared to the Xenons I helped a friend put on his truck and the mounting sucked. They did not have anything attaching them to the body other then the screw in the fender wells. As I said the Xenons had tape all the way around. If you are looking at the BW Extenda Fender flares none of this may apply.

Is the reason for flares because of rock chips? If so that is why I looked at the flares as my wheels wells were getting chipped pretty bad.

I priced flares and thought they were pretty pricey. So I priced spray on bedliner material for the rocker panels and around the wheel wells. I ended up going with the spray on for the rockers and the wheel wells. They followed the raised metals around each wheel creating a flare look and nothing can get behind it.

This is what I did for mine, not for larger tires but for rock chips.

pcarlson,

Could you please post or send me a pic of what this looked like? I am interested in the flares for bigger tires (and looks) and for the rock chip issues. I may call the local Line-X shop and price this out also, but would like to see how it looks beforehand.

Thank you, Nick

Flares

I've been running the Bushwacker street flares for 4+ years. They protrude about an inch and just give you enough for 315's. Also, as a thumbs up for Bushwaker, I smacked a deer a couple of weeks ago and broke my LF flare. When I called to get a replacement, they said that they had improved the design and an exact replacement was not available. Then they shocked me and said they would send me a full set of new ones for the cost of only the LF replacement piece. WOW, that's customer service 4 years after the initial purchase. BTW, no rust.

I was considering mud flaps to prevent the rocks from being shot form my tires and pelting the side of my truck (the lower portion)

Will the fender flares prevent this just as good?
