I lost 5th again, 25,000 miles ago I paid to have my transmission rebuilt with the fully splined shaft, hoping to solve the problem. Well, took it out and like I figured bone stock parts, not much I can do as my receipt is very vague as to what was done to the transmission. I can guarantee it won't happen again though, brand spankin new NV5600 is in there now. I've got some learnin to do, they put reverse in the wrong spot.

Theres plenty you can do like throw your old trans through the front window of the shop/dealership of the f$%*'n person who did the "repair" for you. People like that aggrevate mechanics like myself that do HONEST work, but still take the bad rap for being "crooks" , I would fight it and see where it goes, may help offset the cost of your 5600 conversion. On the other hand I could just rebuild my 4500 and trade you so you dont have to learn where reverse is... ... . :-laf

I like the first idea Pat, maybe pack a little C-4 in there first!! :)

Changing all that out is a lot like work, otherwise I'd jump right on your offer! Oo.

Yea, the C-4 would give a better impression, as far as changing all that out, dont worry I guess I would do all the work. Just cause I'm a nice guy though :-laf

me too

just had my NV4500 rebuilt they took alittle longer than exspected but its back new barens and sincro's new third and fifth runs like new even give me the old gears to prove that they were gon damage only about $1600 but keep in mind they took three weeks to do it and that come w/ a new clutch pres. plate and thowoutbaren and refaced my fly wheel too and new back main seal and new dope so it's a good deal Mathew's Garage cartersville GA 30120 sorry you got shafted but there are good garages out there

P. S. Dodge places suck

you just had to use the term "shafted" didnt you. that sucks man. wish i could find a good mechanic around here. just had a steering gear put in at midas. the steering wheel sits crooked now. went there today in the middle of a job, sat there for over an hour, then the motherf****r comes out and tells me the only qualified tech went home early that day.

what did the conversion cost ya. transmission is starting to shift a little hard so i think its time to start thinking about doing something.

just watch the fluid in it, listen real hard for winding grinding or if its hard to shift . do you down shift when stoping? take a magnet and stick in the side of your transmission where you check it like a pin magnet that teliscops, check for metal shavings or water in the fluid any of this is good to know and try and find a macanic that owns a dodge little shops useualy know more than the big name brands also look what kind of cars they have sitting around if there all hondas or mazdas move on.

Lost 5th gear

Today, I was driving to work and I lost 5th gear. GONE nowhere to be found. What happened ? Has any one had this problem and fixed it themselfs? Whats involve and the cost. I have 145,500 miles on it. 1996 with the nv4500. Do I have to pull the trans? If I do, is there any upgrades I can do while its apart?

pat

No, you don't have to pull the trans to put the 5th gear back on, if 4x4, pull driveline, then transfer case then the aluminium housing off back of transmission, you see 5th gear and the nut loose or floating around. .

It requires some special tools to repair. .

If its a 2x4, remove driveline, then the housing. .

The nut fix can work, but it will likely happen again particularly if you tow.

What about the www.quad4x4.com fix ? Torque-King mod?

Good luck

Andy

Great Article

I went to the site that Boomer II put up.

Check out the 'NV 4500' page links, click on "5th Gear Failures & Solutions", under NV4500 Tech Article.

Very interesting and informative article. If you have a 5 speed it is worth your time to read.

crabman :)
