Tonight the fifth gear nut said bye bye no for warning just rolling along coasting down a small grade and no fifth, shift to fourth and on to work will call shop tommorrow and hopefully they can fix it quick.

Mine did that about a month ago. In the shop on Wednesday out on Thursday. Cost $450 out the door. Just like yours, mine gave no warning. Running down the road, had to downshift to fourth for the car turning in front of me, shifted back to 5th and nothing.

I recommend you read the article by Joe Donnely in the latest TDR issue on the 5th gear nut problem. Standard Transmission in Fort Worth, Texas has the absolute best fix for this. I know the owner, Mike Patton and he has the solution.

I had made up my mind that if I wound up with a standard for my second Ram, I would order the Standard Transmition full splined shaft and have it done ahead of time, since this seems to be one of those WHEN and not IF deals. I think anyone who owns a five speed would be well served to just go ahead and get it fixed before it goes out in the middle of BFE.

Got the truck back today all is well transmission had the first style nut so it did a good job I guess, mechanic said the second revision nut had not had any come backs I hope he's right or the extended warranty can fix it again. They also changed the oil again, good guys at Sheblville Chysler .

ramman
you didn't state what your miles were when you had your failure.
Also the year of your rig
First nut in nv4500 was 1994
1st revision some time before may 96(build mo of my truck/transmission
2'nd revision some time long before June 98 (which still failed )How do i know because that is when my repair failed at 290k.
Which i called the man and got my hands an the 3rd revision was released to go into production july 98 -Tsb'd about sept 98.
which is a clamping nut. Which failed the real real world test.
For a low cost repair fix that will stay in place and can be done in 3 hrs i will repost the part (#)nut you need and the step by step
tommorrow or the next as ford has everything on hold and i have ome extra time . Before ending it out i will hit print and send it to the editors(tdr). Stay tunned!

Stop lugging in 5th gear!!
I just replaced my shaft at 88,000 becuase I was scared it would happen! Turns out my shaft and 5th nut was perfect!

Never lugged it, always hammer down!

The test to tell if you are lugging a diesel--- If you select a gear and it won't pick up speed/rpm it is lugging.
I and you bought a 5 speed(4 spd with over drive--5 th -- and any mfg or anyone else that trys to tell you because the nut came loose is covering there rear's because they know /or in dodge case found out a flaw in there design--Had point D (dodge) contacted point C -(cummins)and point S (spicer/dana)
and asked what if the torque is x hp is y and rpm is under z will the vibration cause any failure??But those engineers were most lilely given an early out(Retirement buy out)
cut cost. . Back then it was a rear-end failure
and the cure was to incress the torque on the bull gear nut from 900 to 1300 ft lb.
The shaft and nut was thicker and beefer than the nv4500. A
Stronger loc nut is needed here. And can not be made and then installed. It would strip the threads of the nut or main shaft. . You clamp nut will fail!! My real world test was at just shy of 50k.
Did i pay big bucks to run in 4th when towing?? Did the sales dept state don't tow in anything but 4th??
I special ordered my ride. Having 4:10s and being a fan of Tim the tool man--tweeked it after 200k(rods & pistons well setted)I drop in to 5th around 42 mph-45 and not lost 5th gear and don't expect to 400k and pulled nc/va/w. va-&ca-wa-id-or-ia mole hills and past the big rigs like they were on jack stands ,grossed 32k+ don't tell me 5th cant be fixed for under $40 dollars (not including 3 hrs labor 4x2) and get rid of that piece of crap input shaft to flywheel needle bearing. and your troubles will be over. I and other people have spent time to get it fail safe under just above normal use. . I 'm my own warranty station because i had 3 simple jobs done by dealerships and each time they (2) failed-and (3 rd)failed to do what "i "the paying owner reguested +$+ and was willing to pay for!!
The dealership's name with held(law suit)??
lets say it is close to another bordering state and when i was there had a very costly toy(vehicel) mounted on a pole. .
The tec's reason was it was not leaking. Guess what reared it 's head after i left??
