I've had a leaky rear main seal for a short while (all other possible sources eliminated) so I'm going to have clutch done at same time even though I've never had any problems with it. My current mileage (140K) would seem to make this a prudent move. My question is should I have the latest fifth gear nut fix done at the same time even though I've never had any problems. The nut is currently original. What is the latest P/N for the fix? I don't want to get saddled with something left over on the shelf.

There is no such thing as a 5th gear nut "fix" they all suck and will come off sooner or later so you might as well keep what you have. If you have the trans out maybe take a look and see if it is tight. The only sure cure is a new fully splined mainshaft from Standard Transmission in Fort Worth Texas and I think there is some one else that has one also. There is a way to make your factory nut stay on longer and I hope it works as I have done it as there wasnt any money to do the mainshaft at the time I had it apart. Another member posted that he used a BIG hammer and center punch and staked the nut to the shaft about 16 places and got 200. 000 miles on it before it came loose again and then did the main shaft. E mail me if you want a copy of the procedure as I dont know where the link to the post is but have a copy of it saved.
