I posted this in 2nd gen also, but I hope someboby knows the answer here.

Well guys, my mother-in-law has made life fun again.

She showed up at our house about a month ago and said she would be relly happy if my fath-in-law would get into the cd era. Well, then she produced a box of 150 or so cassette tapes and asked if my wife would convert them onto cd's for him. It is mostly 50-60 music that there are no cd's made for.

The problem is that after 3 weeks of ME getting the tapes on the hard drive I find out that his truck does NOT have a cd player.

My main question is if the oem radios that chrysler uses read mp3's. I need to know what format to make the files.

Also, I am looking for a cd deck or cd/tape. If anybody has pulled one and wants to sell it, let me know. Otherwise if you know a place to get one reasonable, drop me a line.

His truck is a 2000, without the infinity sound group.

Thanks guys.

As far as I know, none of the Chrysler OEM CD players are MP3 compatable. Some of the older ones may not even read home-brew CD's. I think an aftermarket deck would be his best choice.

I'm not sure of the format that my wife use's but she burns cd's all the time for use in both her 04 jeep grand cherokee and my 04. 5 ram. I asked her what format she used and all she could think of was the program she uses at work asks for either data or music when she burns them.

Did I help answer the question? Probably not. Did I help confuse it? Probably so.

Crud.....

Klenger,

I think I may have to go the aftermarket route. I am going to try an MP3 in my 04. 5 tonight. If it works, I might look for a new radio.

I noticed they have round corners and a different wiring harness. I called and you can get the wiring conversion, but I don't know how the round corners will look. Any idea?

Anybody out there try a new style oem radio in the second gen truck????

PHLOOP,

Ya, you got me confused now..... I definitly need to try it in my truck.

I would have to say your best bet would be just to get an aftermarket radio that will do mp3s. That way you can utilize the disk to its max. Plus a aftermarket stereo will be better than stock. you can pick up a decent one at wally mart for about 170 and wire harness and radio adapter for a total of 200 bucks.

Most CD players play wav format. This is the standard for home burned CDs and as long as you don't use CD-RW, rewritable, you shouldn't have a problem. DC CDs don't do MP-3. Get an IPod and you can transfer all as MP-3 format. You can use a small FM xmitter, a cassette tape adapter, special modulator, or cable to connect to stereo. I use the cassette adapter for the truck and cable into the home stereo and stereo on our Pacifica. Good sound and iTunes makes organizing simple.

The new minis aren't that expensive. Ripped 310 CDs to mp3 on computer and xferred to ipod.

A year ago I bought an FM modulator to play my portable CD player through my truck and car system (neither of which has a CD deck). It works great. I found it at Target for $20.

I just went thru that myself - burned a couple of CD's in MP3 format - they worked fine in the DVD/MP3/CDDA player in our entertainment center - but NOT in the other CD music players we have, or my wife's new Ford Escape - didn't try the Dodge...

Turns out the regular music CD's we have are in a "CDDA" format - and I upgraded my disc burning software to accomodate that format, and now the discs I burn work in all out various CD players...

Radio

Thanks for all the input guys. I bought a cd/tape OEM radio from a member here, and my mother-in-law tossed in the $ for an Ipod. She said that my father-in-law wanted the stock radio look and the ability to just play 1 disc if he wanted.

Turned out well.

Again, thanks for all the help.
