Hello all,

I wonder if anyone has found an answer to filling up a Dodge 03 HO CTD SRW LWB 3500 truck.

My 2003 truck requires twenty five to thirty minutes to pack in the fuel. In comparsion to my past Dodge 2002 2500 CTD LWB truck. It filled up as quickly as my 1986 Dodge gas powered truck.

Any suggestions on changing the fuel filler neck? or adding some type of filtered vent tube?

Thank You, in advance and God Bless.

1969 Plymouth Road Runner 440 / Dana 60

1986 Dodge 1500 with 392ci Hemi engine / onging project.

1975 Bricklin, I know it's powered by a Ford engine.

1985 BMW K100

plus other bikes.

There must be some kind of restriction, venting problem, or something else wrong with yours, because I can fuel mine as fast as my 94. Maybe have your dealer have a look.

It only takes a few minutes to fill from about half full to full no more than 5 minutes, if that. maybe the tank at the station you were fueling at was low.

Even using the car nozzle at slow speed, when the pump kicks off I can still get another 4 to 5 gallons in to top off. And that 4 to 5 gallons goes in a quart at a time - takes a good ten minutes. If I don't top off my gauge tell me I have more fuel than I actually have by about 4 gallons. As long as I top off the gauge is dead on. Don't think my low fuel indicator is working. Had no light but put 33. 5 gallons in. No matter - I love this truck

I agree with bighammer you either have some kind of restriction are the station has some problem. Does this happen every time you fill up?If so go back to the dealer and have them correct it. Never had any problems filling the ones I have had.

Well everyone,

Thank you for the many replies.

I filled up my truck tonight and each time it's a bear to top off.

I have tried at least five different fuel stations, all with the same result. The first eighty percent of the fill up goes just fine.

As long as you pumped it at less than half speed. Any more than that and it burps back. The last four or five gallons need to be pumped in by the penny. As I said with my 2002 CTD 2500 LWB truck would fill up with the fastest big rig fuel pump. I wonder if some of the 2003 HO trucks came with a different diameter fuel neck?

I know its a small thing but I like to keep an honest log of my fuel mileage / engine hour readings.

Being a retired US Coast Guard person, I was always in the habit of doing strange things like taking Vis-gage readings every four hours on many Goverment / US Coast Guard diesel engines / Generators.

Thank You all again, I will be lurking / learning with your help about this very nice truck.

Sorry for the late reply but for some reason both of my past replys locked my system, before I could send them. You guessed it Microsoft XP from the King of thieves... Mr Microsoft.

Bickford, are you trying to bring the liquid level up to the very top of the neck and not just seeing dense foam. I can see why it might take a long time if you are looking for liquid.

I've heard it's not a good idea to pack more fuel after the pump clicks off the first time. Can't remember why, but I usually stop the first time it shuts off.

Topping it off can "sometimes" make the float sTick. But in all my 102k+ on the y2k never had that problem. Will still do top-offs with new one until problem arrises.

I agree with many here that there is something not quite right, I fill up several new CTD trucks a week and use the truck hose with no problems.

Tell the dealer service and see if they can get it straightened out sounds like the vent tube to me also.

My first diesel is due to arrive next week so please excuse this question but a gas powered vehicle your not supposed to top off, is it ok to top off diesels? If so, what makes them different that makes it ok to top them off?

Thanks for any info!

What Dhess said. I bet if you all patiently tried to put as much fuel in as you could, you would find that another 3 or 4 gallons will go in slowly. Thats good for another 60-70 miles on the road. :)

Mine, also is difficult to top off. I don't have a problem with it taking the fuel, it's just the last 4 or 5gals. to top it off. I have noticed that the low fuel light does not come on until the truck is extremely low on fuel. I have been able to also get 33+ gals, immediately following the light coming on. Unlike my 01 that would still have 5 to 6 gals. left.

At the moment we hit empty on the guage, and exactly 0 miles to empty on the display, there is just over 9 gallons in the tank (34 gallon tank). That is sort of a pain, it makes Jodi nervous, and it seems that around 5 gallons in reserve would be plenty. Sort of a glitch, but it seems this varies given the above post.
