Well the truck was below 1/8th a tank when I realized I needed fuel! I headed to the gas station near my work and filled up. I noticed it only took me $37. 01 to fill up and then I saw it. I filled up with dyed diesel. Cetane rating of 40 just like the taxed stuff except this is $. 20 cheaper! I hope I don't get stopped at one of those fuel check stops. I've only seen one in my life but I can only imagine the fine!

Amazing some attendant didn't come running out to stop you. I know the shop that I buy off road diesel from turns the pumps on when you put the yellow cans out of your bed, and off when you leave, to prevent anyone from filling thier truck.

I wish it was legal, certianly won't hurt the truck.

It takes a real long time to get the dye out. I had to use some when I ran real low and a farmer gave me 5 gallons to get me to station didn't even think about it being dyed. Had a fuel pump issue about 3 months later and mechanic mentioned something about running dyed fuel. It had been at least 8-10 tanks of fuel and the injector still had the dye on/in it.

Man you got to love the red fuel. You wont hurt a thing with that fuel. As far as a fuel spot check,I wouldn't worry to much about it with a new truck, just don't go pulling or hauling any logs or logging equipment. Thats when you usually get a spot check, also whats adds to it is if the truck is filthy with mud hauling that stuff it kinda set the little red light and buzzer of in side troopers head you may have red fuel. I think you'll be OK.

You guys need to move to Spudville. Farmers and wannabe all run the dyed stuff 100%. Never seen a check and if the MAN wanted them he could ge all he wanted any time in the rural. There is no enforcement of anything in rural ID. These guys run the Cummins till the filter plugs, change it, and keep on going for many KK miles. Doc

Gives my name a whole new meaning, :D :D :D :--) It's hard to not pull it late at night and fill up at 1. 65 instead of 2. 06. The off-road is right next to the taxed fuel. I "accidently'got a load too, no problems. I can remember running that in big trucks years ago and there was never a problem. Same fuel, just a little more color, as far as i can tell. I don't want to temp fate, but in 15 years of construction trucking and over 30 years driving something I have yet to see anyone get a check for red fuel. I am new to this area, maybe it's a NW thing?

BUT as we've said before - YOU CAN RUN Red Dye Fuel when you are working off road, like on a big farm or ranch. You don't have to buy taxed fuel when you're running on private property, and not using the roads. SO the red dye making a color mark isn't all that dangerous IF YOU are using it as stated. However you don't want to have Red Dye and be on the HWY - Unless you can prove that say you were going from field A to B.....

Yeah I may be safe. I don't see the highway that often. I have a tree farm and go from one farm to the other. Other then that it is a couple of miles to my real job :) The non-taxed fuel is right next to the taxed fuel. The only difference is a 4"x4" sticker saying for off-road use only. Oh well.

You could contact the folks who monitor off road fuel and disclose what happen and offer to pay the tax. They might be able to provide a letter for your records showing what happened.

I live in Kansas and have been checked twice in the last 2 years. DOT truck waiting along the side of the Highway waiting for diesel pickups to pass. They pull you over and use a long straw to check color. Was told by DOT the fine is in the area of $10,000. 00. Not worth the risk for me.

Wow! 10k is a good chunk of money. I didn't expect it to be over one grand to be honest. A couple of thousand is a leason learned ( check the pump twice ). 10 thousand may be a little more then just a leason learned :) I think I'll burn this tank on the farm and fill up next time with taxed diesel for sure ! ;)

I hope they have consolation prize for those with clear fuel. They should give you something for wasting your time.

its a 100. 00 to 10,000. 00 dollar fine. 2nd offence is a felony. (trust me I know). yes you have to appear in court. yes you have to pay tax on what ever your truck holds in fuel. rather your half epmty or not. (not a fun expirence).
