I was swaping out air filter and the filter minder was pulled half way down, I pushed the button to release setting... . It blew apart it so many peices I was unable to find them all. Called dealer... . $90 are you kidding. I have plugged the hole for now. . Any ideas less than 90 bucks?

Yeah, just establish a regular change interval and change it say every 10k, 15k, or 20k miles based on your individual operating conditions.

harvey that is a bad idea. the dirtier the filter get's the better it filters. he needs to replace the filter with the new deep pleat filter and a psm or home depot kit and a aftermarket filterminder and do not change the filter until it is pulled half way down

I agree, a filter does it's best job when the contaminate level is just on the verge of hindering flow. That's why Dodge says to only replace the filter when the filter minder tells you.

Find the cheapest option with the same scaling and put it back in.

I have never seen my filter minder move even a little bit. I once went 27k waiting for the minder to move, and it never did. When I removed the filter the "clean" side was dirty.

So now I just change it every 15k.

I've changed mine once in 43K miles... . And have no plans of changing it anytime soon.

As others have stated... . let the filter load up. . it works better...

After I did the Home Depot/PSM style CAI mod to my filter box, the minder has NEVER moved, whereas it used to be sucked down half way soon after installing a fresh filter. My advice, save the 90$ and mad your airbox like shown here...

Airbox
Ditto with Seafish. After doing the airbox mod,I returned from an extended trip and noticed more smoke than usual. Upon investigation I found the air filter to be completely clogged and the filterminder was reading normal. When the truck was new,the filterminder would go down 1/3 with a mile's worth of usage on a new filter. Best to visually check it periodically, certainly before 15K like I did.

You guys gotta quit yanking his chain like that. :-laf

He actually might believe that nonsense.

My truck bone stock would pull the filter minder down halfway on a fresh filter if I drove it hard enough. If I actually believed Dodge I would never have a good filter. Starving a turbo charged engine for air is never a good thing, not for the engine or the mileage. Change the filter on a schedule and just plug the hole and make sure it seals.

Even with the Home Depot/Lowe's filter upgrade, my '06 sucks the minder down immediately. My '97 never moved. I pull it out and tap the junk out every once in a while and blow it out after particularly dusty drives. I have an Amsoil filter in it but keep a spare OEM type on hand.

I know there was a rash of weak filter minders, but don't recall the year. I wonder if your truck was a late 05 and it was included??

My filter minder only moved when I started pulling more boost than stock on a clean filter, then I went to the cam and could move it on stock boost. Then I added the Home Depot CAI and it only moved at 33+ psi, ditched the Amsoil filter for stock and it hasn't moved since, even at 37 psi on the stocker and 32 psi on the Garrett.

Either way if your filter minder is a good one your safe to use it.

Not sure, first thing I noticed was the ability to pull the filter minder down bone stock. Did not enthuse me.

The fix for that was a custom TQ tube and drill the air box. With a good filter it won't move at +40 psi now. :D It will start pulling down when the filter plugs though, found that out when I plugged the filter with FOD.

I change it every other oil change same as the fuel filter. Cheap insurance to keep the air flowing. :)

Mine would pull in on a new filter too... drilling the stock box full of holes stopped that. However, I have never seen it move since... even on a very dirty filter.

steved replace your box and add a psm kit, your letting hot air in and drastically reducing compressor efficiency, also go to wix 49946 filter

With over 200k on the clock like this, I have seen no ill effect with my modified airbox... at this point, unless I see something proving it is detrimental it will be staying. Keep in mind that Gary did an under hood study and found the under hood air isn't all that hot.

One of these day's I plan to do my own check, and its always pretty hot when I pop the hood. . But I don't do that at 65!

As I have said before, if it was that detrimental I would have thought I would have seen it by 250k. My EGTs run right where I see everyone else report their EGTs run, I get as good or better mileage as everyone else, and I have almost 200k of this set up in use (not to mention how many others have done the same mod).

Maybe for someone racing, who is worried about every little detail and degree on the EGT gauge, but for the average CTD owner there are too many variables to say if my setup actually affects anything. Am I pressing the throttle harder than the next guy? Is my exhaust manifold flowing exactly the same as the next guy? Is my oil creating more parasitic drag than the next guy? All of that has an effect on EGTs. As long as MY EGTs stay in check when MY truck is cruising down the road... do I really care that my box is pulling hotter air than the next guy's?? My truck does everything I want it to, and does it well enough for me... so I really don't care if its not "perfect".

I would guess heat sink in components has more affect than the minor increase (if any) my modified airbox creates.

And further, this truck hasn't been babied... I've also done things that are supposed to be really detrimental (running 2100 miles without a lift pump for example), just because I had to. It hasn't lived the hardest life, but I haven't been easy on it either.
