well, i pulled the $260 p. o. s. borgeson off of the truck tonight. checked the bearing preload on the steering box. it was ok. i bought another oem shaft and put it on and drove the truck. tight as a frog's ass. i will get borgeson to repair their shaft and put it on the classifieds on the tdr when it comes back. no more after market for me. i'll just keep replacing the oem every 75k mi.

thanks to all for the help!

scott.

What actually causes the "clunk"? Or maybe I should ask, what wears on the steering shaft to cause you to replace it? My 2000 clunks when I let of the clutch and when I stop hard, but it doesn't seem to effect the steering. I haven't looked into it yet to see what the problem is...

Don't you mean, "tight as a Oo. a$$ :D :D

I too have the same clunking problems with my OEM. It has been replaced once by the dealer. I'm out of warranty now... ... how much $$ for a replacement OEM?

$150 at the dealer.....

some say to grease the crap out of it. what a pos design. my honda with 250k mi on it doesn't go thru near the parts... . both vehicles are driven on the highway.

Another fine example of **ealers ripping people off. Mine wanted $290 for it, that's why I went with the Borgeson. Not to mention the parts guy said, "they never go bad. "

TPlasek,

That was my thought when I looked at it. It is a 2-piece shaft that slides together in the center. Looking at it, you'll see what I mean. I was able to grab mine, and wiggle it back and forth. Not sure if I should have been able to or not, but the Borgeson was solid as a rock at that same point, and the truck drives straight as an arrow, now.

Jim

Wow this is hilarious.

I've had a clunk that started about 3 months ago and it's getting slightly worse. When I take off from a start and when I hit the brakes, I get a little clunk feel in the steering wheel. Checked all the suspension, shocks can't find ANYTHING. Then, I finally decided to grab hold of the steering shaft and noticed that the joint under the boot is sloppy... I can wiggle the two halves of the shaft... .

So I get on here and notice this thread... . gotta love this site!!!!

So, can someone here please explain what is under the boot, and what is a GOOD fix for it? Not necessarily OEM????

Chris

okay,

The gearhead in me says why the heck can't I just compress the outer sleeve and tighten the assembly back up???? It's just two pieces of tube is it not????

I think I'll try that first and grease it well... can't hurt if I'm replacing it anyhow... . Seems too simple.

That will work. However, bear in mind that the two shafts have to colapse together in order to keep you from getting shishkabobed if you hit something hard. I used a flaming river shaft in mine because the u-joints were loose.

I did the steering box adjustment the other night on mine and played hell getting the steering shaft off. It was froze up where it slides. Once I got it off, I worked and worked to get it sliding freely. Now it klunks like you guys stated. Didnt klunk before I got it moving:rolleyes:
