I'm going to Colorado Friday morning (3:00am), and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on things to check over. Besides the obvious, tires (new), oil, lights, wipers,... Any bolts that need checked, and maybe have a little Loctite applied?
Also I've had my signature say that I've got the tach, but its hasn't worked since I put it on! I know that the sensor works (Thanks to mark93, if the sensor works, so does the charging system), but the gauge still won't work. I've got a good ground, 12V, but I don't know about the signal. The only weird thing is that when I put the throttle on the floor, the needle will jump around a little. I already had Scheid Diesel (Great Guys) send me a different one, but it does the same thing. Any suggestions?
On a brighter note, I finally got my "dream exhaust" A 5", 4' chrome stack, run through the bed, right behind the cab. And not only does it look great, but it sounds even BETTER! Also got my 16cm housing on, which combined with the exhaust increased overall boost by about 4psi. Before either change, I was seeing 15psi, today with the 16cm and exhaust I saw 19psi. I'm just a little dissappointed because I wanted to hit 20 or more, but I guess that I'll have to wait for the injectors down the road. Maybe I'll recheck the intercooler clamps, and airbox, and exhaust, and turbo.
Thanks in advance, and I hope your trucks sound as good as mine!

Chris,
I just got home from 3200 mile trip towing my boat and have the same basic mods as you, even the non functioning tachometer! I only saw 19 lbs boost at the most but my Egt never got over 1050 degrees even with outside temps in the 115-120 range, I gross about 12,000 lbs. Good luck on your trip.
HAPPY RAMMIN,

Chris, you've likely checked out the important stuff, but you asked, so here goes;lub level in diff and transmission, front wheel bearings, disk pads and rear shoes, check transmission crossmember and transmission mounting bolts, spare has 50/60 psi, acc. drive belts, prehaps a spare belt coupla quarts of oil and can of brake fluid behind the seat, check the water pump weep hole for seepage, if the exhaust system is brand new, I'd check any clamps to make sure they were still tight. Thats the short list.

Thought of something else (hense the edit), I like to apply RainX just before a road trip, makes the bugs come off easier, and it't cool to run down the highway without the need for the windshield wipers when it rains. Works best above 60MPH.

Good luck and enjoy the trip, vacation or work? Ronnie

Chris ,
i had the same problem with my tach when i tried to use the existing harness, so i glued 2 magnets to the ballancer that i bought for a cruise control and the tach has worked perfectly ever since, no problems

Hey boatpuller, how about those tachs!
GeneH, maybe if I had one of those pricy digital cameras, in the meantime, I guess that you just have to see it in person! (Not to mention hear it!)
moparguy, did find one loose transmission crossmember bolt. Water pump is something that I need to check, but as for everything else, it should check out ok. As for the RainX, already have it, and boy doesn't it work great! Members, if you don't have it on yours, put it on!
This is my long awaited vacation; white water rafting, biking down Pikes Peak, fishing, and whatever else I find to do.

Well, its great to be back online. (Never thought I'd say that) My Cummins completed the 2,250 mile(have to update signature) journey without missing a beat. The only thing that I didn't like was the blue smoke when cold. It would go away when it warmed up, but when it was cold, it would put out some smoke! Also I made it up Pikes Peak without a problem. Going up, no problem, but coming down the E. G. T. was only 'bout 100 Degrees, so more blue smoke, Lots! Other than that, no noticable difference. You all will be happy to know that the Dodge/Cummins partnership is being well represented in Colorado! Lots of 2nd Generation trucks, only a few 1st Gen. Observed fuel mileage; about 18. 5 mpg. Thought it would be better, but 70-75 is a little fast for the nice wind-breaker of a truck I have. Another weird thing, the needle on the tach would jump at random. Just crusin' down the road, it might move a little, then just quit. Must be a loose connection somewhere?
As a small token of my appreciation, I treated the truck to a wash-n-wax on Sunday. Man, does it look good when its clean!
Here's a question for you Amsoil folks, what kind of intervals are you using for engine oil changes? Mine went to tan-colored to more blackish. (Blue Smoke?) (Fuel Contaminitation?)

Chris I have been using amsoil's 15w40 marine syntheic and their bypass filter for over 150,000 miles. With the bypass filter the oil stays clear for about 4500 miles. I change both filters(bypass and full flow) and oil every 6000 miles. I also take an oil sample and send it off for an analysis. I have 183000 miles so far with no engine problems.

I also have the Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Fully Synthetic Oil in mine but its only been in for 6,500 miles. I am using a Fleetguard Microglass filter, was planning on changing it at about 7,000 or 7,500 miles. Maybe its time for an anaylsis?
