Finally close to finishing my truck repaint.......

Due to a bear having his way with my truck........I got a new bedside, tailgate and paint! For you guys that don’t do body or paint repairs, it sucks! Was way more work than I anticipated. Results were good.

Stripped it to bare metal since the factory silver (Driftwood) was peeling. The truck had previously had a bedside from an accident but the paint really didn’t match well and considering the condition of the remaining paint is why I decided to strip it down.

Looks great! Some day my '98 might look that nice again. If it survives long enough.

Nice. Had mine done a few years back, well worth the 10k. That included new dr door, both outer front fenders, both bed wheel arch patch panels and other metal work along with paint. Keeping it forever...

Don, it really looks good and yes the bodywork part can be a time consuming job but the most important for the finished product. If anyone would want to go thru this checkout Eastwood as they have a high fill catalyst primer I believe is called Feather Fill. It definately helps the primer stage/block sanding alot faster. What manufacturer and type of paint did you use ?.

I had originally wanted to use chromabase paint and DuPont epoxy primer, however, the price of 2700.00 just for the pant and primer sent me across the street to Napa’s paint shop. I got Crossfire paint and Martin Senior clear as well as their brand of epoxy primer. It was 1200.00 at NAPA for everything including materials. Paint looks fantastic and we’ll see how long it lasts!

What a change in paint prices from when I was a regular at the Ditzler paint store in the mid to late 70's. I had a 69 satellite with a worked 340, nitrous etc. painted it black lacquer with clear. Black was $19.00 a gallon. Painted the roadrunner Tor Red $65.00 a gallon. I picked up a pint of Driftwood for the truck a couple of years ago $35.00. I about had a heart attack when I heard that one.

We all know what happened to paints. They've been cleaned up for environmental purposes, which is certainly good, but at a substantial cost. The Economic Punishment Agency has driven all of these changes, hence the costs associated.

I have my truck in the booth stripping it down and preparing for bedliner underneath and in bed, then repaint in Intense Blue with a possible silver rocker accent. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The straight paint lines are due to a very attentive body/paint guy that painted my truck. He used fine line tape and attention to detail. We painted in the following order:

1. Prime/block sand
2. Paint silver paint on sides, overlapping where the paint lines will be
3. Tape off and paint red on top and bottom
4. Apply clear coat on everything.
5. Scuffed and painted bumpers and camper shell at a later time........didn't have room in the shop for all that stuff at once.

In 2003, I was getting bids to repaint my 94 2500. I only took bids for high quality paint jobs. The average was @ $7500.00, so I’d say your cost was @ the norm, unless you did all prep and, and as you noted, had it professionally spray painted.

It looks great, a job well done.

BTW, I abandoned the painting due to my 04.5, when I put the $10K as my down payment. The truck was solid red, that I sold to a Gardner, now it’s mostly light silver. :-laf

I traded an outboard motor for my paint job. I paid for paint and supplies.....rigged a used 90 horsepower Evinrude ETEC on the painters Lowe deep v hull......and lots of other stuff like wiper motors, canvas top and some trailer work. Paint jobs in Fairbanks, Alaska cost 10k for cheap and 15k for average. The trade worked out great for both of us. He didn’t have 12k for a new engine and I didn’t have that kind of money for a paint job. Bartering is alive and well here.

FYI, I had my appendix try and kill me last spring.....while recovering from that I spent a week grinding and sanding the paint off. I did all the grunt work and my paint guy did the body work (minimal dents and dings) as well as priming and sanding. He did a great job.

I got his boat done last summer and he had most of the early part of winter to do my truck. He was most pleased with having a modern outboard that he can trust. He was running an 80s vintage Nissan 70 that quit all too often. It was driving him crazy!
