I've had what I thought was a driveline clunk since I got my truck. I was sure it was the driveshaft splines lacking grease and sticking to the t-case output shaft, but as I was undoing the u-joint caps I noticed the spare tire was hanging loose. Well Duh!, I should have checked this months ago when it was mentioned here on TDR forums. Oh well, at least the clunk is gone and the truck feels alot tighter now :).

If it clucks too many times the cable will eventually break and you will loose your spare. I lost a brand new one when the cable broke.

klunk-(tire)

you might want to consider an "anti lose" device, a covered bicycle chain and lock. run the chain through the tire and over the cross member. keep you from losing it on the hi-way or by some ones hand.

just my pennies worth.
