I have been looking for a 2nd Gen for a friend and we finally found one locally-

1997 2WD 3500 Quad Cab SLT Laramie 5-speed, 4. 10 rear, no engine mods, 180K miles. Thanks to everyone that responed to my ad and to those that PM'd me about trucks for sale.

He got it for a fair price, and it runs really well, but it does need a few things.

The muffler is missing and so is the catalytic converter, steering gearbox is leaking, AC is not working(damaged condensor from road debris). It kind of looks like it was taken care of early in life and the latest owner just didn't fix the little things as they broke. He did use Fleetguard Stratapore filters and the trans was recently rebuilt.

Should he replace/rebuild the entire gearbox or just replace the seal?

The guy said that the catalytic converter was required in AZ but not in Utah so he took it off. Did this truck come from the factory with one? If so, I would think that it would be against the law to remove it.

What is a good source for a new condensor?

Congradulations on your find. I have a 97 (3500 dually LB CC 5spd 4X4 185K miles) that I got from Texas. It had a catylic on it but somehow it got lost... so I put a 4 inch exhaust on without the kitty.

I'm very happy with my first diesel and finding the TDR site at the same time. You'll need to get rid of the stock air box and get a high flow filter and then it will run real nice. Of course, once the bombing bug bites, you'll be planning for more. :-laf
