Biodiesel

Biodiesel has finally become available here in Manhappiness, Kansas. It only costs $. 05 more than regular #2, and I would be willing to pay that, but I don't know if there will be any adverse affects on the old truck. I tried the archives, but didn't come up with much specific to the VE pump, and how it will react. I think that the grade available is B20, but the people that I talked to at the CO-OP weren't real sure, it may only be B2. I know that initially it will clean out the fuel system, and I can expect to go through a few fuel filters, but I'm more concerned about the seals in the pump. Does anyone have experience with B20 and the VE? Will it eat the seals? I figure the more biodiesel that gets sold in the US, the closer it gets us to B100, which is truly a renewable resource. I'm no tree hugger, but I'm also not fond of sending my money to the Middle East, and I just want to be informed before I fill the tank.

Thanks

AJ

I ran B100 from September to Thanksgiving last fall. Ran B10-B20 during the winter months with anti-gel. In a week or so I hope to go back to B100. I think the weather is warm enough finally.

GO FOR IT!!! I'm anxiously awaiting biodiesel availability in my area (so cal) B20 or B100. From the reading I've done on B20, there are no detrimental effects whatsoever running it in vehicles that were previously run on dino #2 diesel. Heck, the US military runs it. B100 however, because it actually has a greater solvent effect than #2, can and will loosen deposits or gummy film that may have accumulated in your fuel system. This may require changing out your fuel filter more often at first, but after awhile, your fuel system should be clean as a whistle. Lubricity of biodiesel is also superior. The amazing thing is, that Rudolph Diesel, the inventor of the compression ignition heat engine, had this all figured out in the late 1800's. He was running his new invention on straight vegetable oil ! This is something I want to pursue for my 1st gen as well. I am absolutely not a tree hugger either. I think it would be truely patriotic to promote/use biodiesel, have our American farmers in the midwest grow soybeans (an excellent crop for biodiesel production), stimulate our American economy, greatly reduce our dependency on foreign oil, and thumb our noses at those countries that would hold us hostage with it. Just my 2 cents K2

I've been running B20 for over 6 months now with no ill effects. No prescheduled filter changes either. The motor seems to be a little more quieter now. Not the exhaust tone but the engine noise.

I have been running both trucks on a B5 to B10 blend for the last 1. 5 years. I have about 40K running and like it. The milage is up about 1 mpg (ballpark estimate). I haven't had any problems running it. It is a good option to help support a US product and reduce Middle East dependancy.

We've got a local jobber here that's now selling B20 AND B100. I was contemplatig trying a tankfull of B20 in da house to start off with, and if all goes OK, go with the 100 the next time around. I'm no tree hugger either, but I'm all for a product that is at least partially produced by Midwestern farmers as opposed to a buncha radicals that like to hijack our aircraft and fly 'em into our buildings.

PS: FWIW, I have all new STAINLESS STEEL fuel line, with new rubber hose at each end, and a Racor 445R filter/water seperator in addition to the OEM filter on the engine.

I've checking out the biodiesel for a few years now , would be making but my fulltime rv-er lifestyle needs a base to set up a lawn shed for the prosseser, should be soon, I've found about 5-6 university studies, one using mostly CTD eng. the up sides are many, the down sides are few,the biodiesel in a high % where that starts I have'nt found yet becouse all the studies I've seen have been 5%-10%-20%--80%-100% so it would seem that more than 30% at least will desolve rubber products, hoses&seals, then I've heard that most cars& trucks went away from rubber to mostly viton in about mid 90s, also the cleaning, filter issue is also a high % thing . Making it for us seems to be the way to go becouse from the reading here ,that almost everbody is doing some of there own work and making biodiesel is simple, your cost of making a fuel that is better for these engines at around . 40 gal. after getting waste fryer oil , would be automatic . the retail prices I've seen range 3. 25-3. 90,do a search for a few sites ,biodiesel .org-retail fueling sites. biodiesel-biofuels reasearch MU. biofuels supplies&suppliers journey to forever.

I am now on my third tank of biodiesel and have been very happy with the results. The only drawback is the price! I filled up yesterday with B20 at $2. 59/gal, but then the price for straight diesel in high priced Santa Fe, NM is $2. 55. Sometimes this B20 is less than regular diesel. I will gladly pay even . 10 per gallon over the price of regular diesel to prevent my money going to the mideast. My truck is also quieter in the engine compartment and seems to run smoother, the exhaust smells much cleaner. too. Right now, there is only one station in New Mexico that carries the product.

hey all this is my first post or thread (hell I don't know). anyhoo I've been running B20 for about 5000 miles with no problems. I am atree hugger but am very encouraged to read that those who are not are joining the renewable resource revolution anyway :) 1st gen dodge/CTD's rule Oo.

Have been running home brew B100 (from WVO) about a year, blended to B30-B50 in winter with Arctic Express to help.

Not an issue (at least from BD use) so far and the injectors looked fine when out a month ago.

I'm a tree hugger too! At least long enough to get into the tree stand I occasionally hunt from.

Good Luck with B-20 and B-100, It sell good in the Northwest where diesel been over priced due get this, lack of refinery capacity causing a shortage. Look like it was engineered to me.

Not sure where Covington LA is exactly, but B20 is available here in Jackson. There is a plant making it in Meridian. It has been costing me a little less than #2. I run it whenever it is available. They are having trouble producing enough to satisfy demand.

Call Tommy Johnson @601-372-8445 and he can help you out if you want to buy bulk. The blended is significantly cheaper than B100 becasue ot the tax credit.

man, you guys are sharp-didn't think about my sig- how's "bean smasher for life" :p any suggestions?. . thanks for the heads up in jackson, it's about 2. 5 hrs from here so i'll be making the call.
