CJ4. Pre emissions engines collectively run hundreds of millions of miles every year off of CJ4 oil with not one oil related failure. It's just not an issue.

since the off road equipment is having to meet the tier requirements the ci-4+ has dried up. i have a chart produced by the petroleum quality institute of america, they listed about 30 or 40 oils, i only kept page one that had 15 oils on that page, one stands out head and shoulders above the others as far as the wear package and is easy to get it is the delo 400 15w-40 i do not think i can blow it up and post it here but i got it off there web site and you should also be able to. things like boron, zink, phosphorus and molybdenum were at the very max of standards/ranges where some oils like NAPA premium only had some zink

I would have liked to of found some better info for comparison but could only find limited literature on the Multigrade 15w40.

Delo 400 LE 15w40 (CJ4)

TBN 9.6
Phosphorus wt % 0.12
Zinc wt % 0.13

Delo 400 Multigrade 15w40(CI4+)

TBN 11
Phosphorus wt% 0.139
Zinc wt % 0.151

The lower TBN is a moot point with ULSD. CJ4 spec'd oils have proven to have the capability to do extended service intervals equal to or greater than CI4 oils. I dont have any hard data but I would wager less than 1% of pre emission diesel owners are still using CI4 oil. Ive seen the comparisons here on TDR and respect the opinions of those that put time into the article but its hard to dispute real life results.

I'm useing caterpillar oil 15w40 CI4+ and havent heard it's not available anymore bought 6 gallons about 7 months ago.

Just remember what you do find - stick with it. Changing oil brands can spike the copper from the oil cooler for example. If you want to be sure your oil is doing it's job get UOA done and do it often to look for trends.

A real difference in oil you can see is synthetic vs. conventional. Conventional CJ4 has it's limits as does every oil. Synthetic has higher limits for high temperature without changing grades from 40 to 50. Just remember they had to reformulate (Shell did at least off the top of my head) CJ4 oil to get the same drain intervals for their fleet customers. So it's reputation has thorns on the rosy picture being presented.

A quality oil filter is also important for longer (even standard 7K) drain intervals as some filters are not up to the challenge and take your engine out when they fail.

"Experts" and oil company mouthpieces can say what they want, but I stocked up on CI4-Plus when it was being phased out, still have enough for 2 more changes, which is another 2-3 years - assuming *I* last that long...

And no, oil degradation in stored oil doesn't worry me...;)

Anyone wanna compare oil analysis numbers... :D

I've got a recent 15k mile UOA I will gladly compare, although it's not going to be an apples to apples comparison as mine are without bypass filtration. Not to mention they will be with 2 different engines.

I'm far from an expert on the subject but then again I really don't need to be. CJ4 oil has been around for 9 years now. How many oil related failures have you heard of? A little basic research is all that is needed to shoot down virtually every argument I've heard on this forum that supports CI4 oil as being superior.

Here's one of my oil analysis - 20K miles:

And yup, that's with a bypass filter installed. No, it's not necessarily about outright engine failures - probably not many of those with even the cheapest of "quik-stop" $1 per quart oils - but it IS about long term engine wear. And even that might not be of interest to guys who trade vehicles every couple of years. I've seen reports of guys who NEVER change oil, only add it as needed, with the fact/theory that since they will be trading the vehicle off in 2-3 years, the added wear on the engine is the NEXT owners worry, not theirs.

BUT, I keep my vehicles over the long haul, and with frequent RV towing, prefer do treat my engine with the best I can reasonably trust and afford...

It's never let me down yet! ;)

How much make up oil was added during that run? Which oil was this? I've heard countless times how CJ4 promotes accelerated wear and have yet to hear one good reason why this old wives tale is still kicking around. Plenty of evidence in the form of UOAs to disprove that floating around.

My Blackstone analysis have came back nearly identical from when it was new regardless of oil. CI was the oil at purchase then everything changed.

I run plain olé Delo 15/40 I buy it by the case at Costco...... been in my truck since new. First motor went 160K loss an injector rebuilt the motor I'm at 632K on this motor. While I have a by-pass filter I change my oil every 10K. It uses about 2qts in 10K running strong.
