Where do you mount a fire extinguisher in a 2004. 5 Quad cab? Sounds like a stupid question but I throw it out anyway.

Thank you for your responses.

I have the same problem with my 98. 5. Everything in the cab is plastic and nothing is

what I would consider a hard mount.

What I finally did was place it in a back pack under the rear seat on the driver side, loose. I have not had any problem with it. The kids occasionaly kick it and complain that it is hard.

I hope you have a 1st aid bag too w/flash light.

While I am being long winded... .

I learned a lot from taking a fire extingusher course.

There were a lot of small things that you can pick up only be doing.

(this was after I had a truck fire).

Be safe!

Thanks for your response!

I have had one vehicle fire (1992 Chev station wgn) and a fire extinguisher saved my neck. I make my family keep one in each of their vehicles ever since.

The only space that seems reasonable is behind the front center seat, mounted to the floor. But this would/could get in the way. I keep a loose travel ditty bag there or a cooler there when we travel.

I also keep a first aid kit (people) under the back of the front passenger seat also. Takes away some of the foot space... ... ... but I do not have a lot of people in the back seats when we travel. Also a dog first aid kit in the back with hunting equipment. Primarily for dog pads and lacerations that can/do happen in the field.

I prefer not in the cab.

If you have a tonneau or topper (canopy, cap, shell, etc. ) it will be out of site mounted inside the box near the tailgate. My place is inside the toolbox.

Of course you have to find another place when hauling things or remove the toolbox.

I keep mine in my toolbox in a box with a first aid kit and other emergency stuff. Haven't needed to use any of it yet but ya never know.

I mounted my fire extinguisher to the side of the front passenger foot well.

Halon Fire Extinguisher. :D

P. S. Halon is no longer available. :(

I've got one tucked away under the driver's side rear seat, beneath the fold flat floor. Kick the passenger out, fold up the seat and floor and "presto". Also have a bigger one in the toolbox in the bed.

As mentioned, very important to keep it handy (and a med kit) since you might need to access it quickly, and digging through a bunch of stuff can take valuable time. Hope this helps.

jcbrown: Halon is great (just bad for the environment). When Halon was available I bought one for each car and a couple of big ones for the house and truck. You can get the extinguisher serviced. They should be able to recover all the Halon, service and repressurize.

Halon beats having to spend weeks cleaning an engine. Been there done that. But the dry powder did save the old truck: Carb back fired, knocking fuel line off with engine still running which pumped a bunch of fuel to the fire. I had the fore thought not to raise the hood past the safety catch. One puff and it was out and the clean up began.

A couple of thoughts: Halon does not work as well in an Engine compartment. The problem is that it just settles out. In a room or anything that will holds licquid it works great because it settles and displaces air. The fire can not restart unless wide blows it out.

Keep in mind that dry chemical fire extinguishers do require some periodic maintenance. Especially in a vehicle the vibrations will pack the powder into a brick. Periodically you need to pick them up and shake them, make sure you can hear the powder moving inside. If not you need to beat it (gently) until it loosens up. Its harder to do but storing it horizontally is preferable for preventing the powder from packing.

You don't want to have a fire and squeeze the handle and have nothing but the propellant come out.

Mounted mine on the drivers seat frame under the adjustment handle.

Halon went bye bye a number of years ago after it was found out that it destroys the ozone. It is in the same class of chemicals as some of the car refrigerants that have been replaced.

There are substitutes: Look for products that are targeted to computer room and food prep. I don't know what the differences are. This sounds like good questions the next time I have to re-cert for extingusher.

I did a google search for Ansul Halon replacement

Aero k

Novec Fire Protection Fluid 1230

FM-200 clean fire suppression agent.

FE-241 clean fire suppression agent.

Some of the new stuff looks even better than halon. The problem with halon (beside the ozone issue) is that it displaces 02. The first thing we are taught about escaping fire is the crawl. The problem with Halon is that it settles. So, you get down on the floor after a Halon discharge and you die. Not a good thing!
