WASHINGTON -- Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. will pay $41. 5 million in a settlement to head off lawsuits by states over defective tires the company recalled more than a year ago.

Somehow, reading this just gives me the creeps. I can't figure out what it is... Is Firestone being blackmailed by government to give it money to save it from lawsuits? Or is Firestone bribing government to save it from lawsuits?
Somehow, this just smells bad to me. All the way around.
