Howdy Friends,
Thought I would share experiences of first time changing the accessory belt on the 2009 C&C and repacking the bearings on the tensioner. Ordinarily, there wouldn't be anything special about changing the accessory belt except I chose to use the Heavy Duty belt, Gates K081264HD for $38.78 with free shipping from Amazon. The difference is I believe the belt is a little thicker, and it took over two hours to get it to fit in between the harmonic balance (crank) pulley and the cooling fan pulley. I have the scars to prove it. Had to use a long pry bar to get the last two ribs of the belt onto the pulley. Honestly, the standard original belt, which has been on the truck since manufacture 9 years ago, looked great and even wear. Read as the standard duty works just fine. FTI: I bought two of these HD belts, one for the C&C and one for the 2003 2500. First belt went on 2500 easy, now we'll see haw well it goes on the 5.9L. That will be another forum and another time (got to recover from scratches sustained from mounting the belt on the 6.7L). :{
Now the other part of repacking bearings on the accessory best tensioner: prior to yesterday, I never heard of doing it. The tensioner still has plenty of tension, I have sore arms to prove it. I asked my brother in law, a master mechanic, if I shouldn't replace the tensioner. He said I could or I could service it. Really? Yep, there are bearing seals on it and you can pry them out without damaging them. I popped it out, and sure enough there was barely any grease in there. I pressed in some high temp axle grease, popped the seal back on and good as new. It's everyone's call whether they want to replace the tensioner for about $70.00 +/- or service it. I'll be an honest reporter on this if I have any problems, but seem logical dry bearings could be cause of tensioner failure.
Happy to hear any questions or comments about either of these activities,
Take care, Ron
