Competition Drag Racing Teqhnique/Tips

So here I am cruising up 100 at 65mph, cruise set. I slowly roll up on a guy on a Harley (or Harley like). I know nothing about bikes, but I can take a good guess, I'm thinking it's was definitely a lower end Harley (or like) bike. Loud pipes and all.

Turbo's whistling at about 10psi (slight hill) and the biker is just starring at the front of the truck (he's in the right lane, i am in the middle lane). This goes on for a good 10 seconds. So I put the boxes on kill and roll into the throttle hard. Naturally, my pipe is louder then his at this point! I check my mirror as soon as I pass and I see him all crouched down and his right hand cocked down, I had about 6 or 8 trucks on this bike by the time I was at 90mph and let out.

Not a very accurate race with the jump I had but he sure as heck didn't catch up cuz I know I was pulling away perty hard. :) I got no acknowledgment at all when he did the ricer fly by on his Harley.

He wasn't racing..... just trying to get ahead of the smoke! LOL He was looking at the truck & just hoping that you wouldn't go past him & choke him out! LOL

If that was a Harley there is only one explanation... ... if it was a Harley, and a low end one at that. The low end Harley is called a sportser, there are two models a 883 (59 hp)and 1200 (74 hp), both are 5 speeds and carberated except the 2007 are all EFI now b/c of emissions. I can tell you from past experience when I owned one... 70+ on a sporty is near topped out for comfort.

The fastest I went on mine was 113 (on a 1200) and that took a while. Now if you race one off the line, good luck; I raced a WRX-sti and spanked it. So don't be too over joyed... now I'll race you on my bike I have now ( 2007 Softail Night Train w/ 103" and a six speed ) and your dreams will be crushed :-laf . I made 101 hp and 109 ft lbs at the wheels. My 0-60 is in the high 2's low 3's and it will do 120+ with very little effort. I can get up to over 100 on your average on ramp. Don't get me wrong our trucks are fast but not in the same league in acceleration as bikes. If you want a real race you should go after a Suzuki hyabusa. They are a 200+ street legal race bike.

maybe this is a little out of place. I'm a bike mechanic at a small shop. We had a guy come through with a built GSXR1000. He let me take it for a ride... words can't describe how fast it was. In first gear, just casually rolling on the throttle, it was at 78 mph at 13k rpm... it redlines at 15k.

James is right though...completely different league.

V-rod and a ford

I have a v-rod. One night cruzing to dinner a power stroke started to pass on a two lane road. I let the front of his truck get to my rear wheel, Popped down two gears and smashed it. He never got his front end past my bike. I left him siti'n. The girl friend kidney punched me for about 30 sec. after shut'n down the stroker. When the fellow went to pass te next time, he did it very slowly and gave me the thumbs up as he pasted.

Running down the road at about 30mph on the rod, a Boss Hoss pulled up and wanted to run, I saw him grab the clutch and roll, I thought about trying, but as he let the clutch out his head snap back and I almost saw daylight under the front wheel. He made my v-rod look like a moped. I believe it was a 383 stroker. Boss Hoss is a massive v-8 bike, with 2 speed power glide transmission. I heard the 2 speeds are nicknamed, Fast and Blurry.

I can toy with Evo's and STI's as it is so I know I'm in the mid to low 13's give or take a 10th.

And I know for a fact the low end harleys are slow, like 14's slow. :) But I'm sure he was thinking, it's just a diesel truck why not! And then had a little wake up call. :)

Naturally, the truck isn't in the same league by any means, but it's nice to tuck some sorta bike under you belt, even if it is a slow bike in terms of bikes.

As far as fast bikes... I know little, but friends I grew up with lived on them when the snow melted. Friend of my went from a Super Hawk to a R1 modified a bit. We took the R1 in the back of the truck down to Tennessee for a long weekend to visit a friend that has a quick Talon, like 900 WheelHorsepower (AWD) Talon. Boost "starts" at 5000rpm, kinda setup.

So we are cruising at 90mph and us in the talon jump on it and walked the R1 to about 180mph had about 2 cars only. I dunno, fast car? or fast bike? :)

I think I could peddle faster than a hardly :)

Wouldn't sound as good though... ... ..... :-laf

Its not really fair to compare one bike that redlines at 6,200 to one that redlines at 15,000. One is built for cruising with lots of low end torque and the other, light your nuts on fire racing with high rpm horse power. They both serve their purposes well. :D

I've got a relatively "slow" bike and I would take on most trucks without blinking.

So do I... . :-laf

Oh wait, you said "take on most trucks" not "take it on most trucks". My mistake ;)

The only advantage I have over the Hayabusa is that when the kids are done riding the bikes, we can fit two of these 50's behind the third seat in our Excursion.

Those honda xr 50's are badass. I love to ride those things. Oo.

i got me a nice lil kill last night too. . i was drivin along minding my own business last night bout 11 when a harley pulls out next to me and punches it (its very noticeable if its a harley or a straight piped cummins) so of course i do too, (i had the TST at the time) i was on level three so i just about level out with him and turn it into a race. . well we come to a light and he says "yea looked like you had your rpms about limited out there", i said yea i did  so he says "well you know that things just a diesel, a bag a bolts" funny thing is, he was serious. now i gotta teach him a lesson. . so i turn it up to 7 and literally wave as the other light turns red (stupid lag) and punch it, that was great i just plain left him!! well i slow down at about 70ish, to go through an S turn and he catches up and gives me a head nod as i tore off again uncontested this time.

Just for reference, even some of the "baggers" out there today are stupid fast. My bike (pictured below) is 152 BHP @ 9,500 RPM and weighs 615 pounds wet.

Be careful what you pair up against.....

I've had bunches of different kind of m. cycles, everyone knows a Harley is the slowest thing on two wheels, one of my bikes is a HD Road King, good motorcycle, just heavy and slow when stock.
