OK, I took a stock unit out for a 10 mile drive:

I found the shifter to be very notchy, but it loosened up by the end of the ride... not fully, but it was getting better

The reverse gear is wierd to get into. You have to push fairly hard to get past the spring... It is a little scary to downshift from 3rd, But I never hit it

My final opinion is that this transmission will be a nice smooth unit after it breaks in... And that the 5th gear is a bit hard to get into (new and all)

I will take it home tonight for a better test

Nice pics Tom! Shift pattern looks the same as my 2000 NV4500 5-speed. Reverse is right where I am used to it being! :)

 Reverse is right and down on the 5-speed (NV4500)... ...

Great info Tom! Glad you're on our team ;) Also, an aluminum case... ... interesting

-Scott

Yea, aluminum. Should be OK though? After all, we've been using aluminum wheels for a long time with no issues.

Anybody know what the new G-56 weighs as opposed to the NV5600? I'm guessing a lot less due to the aluminum case.

Does that truck have 4. 10 or 3. 73 gears? Those rpms look pretty similiar to my 5 speed with 4. 10's.

Tomeygun... Thanks for rolling that big o'l CTD on its back so we could get a good look at the first picture... Must have played havoc with the sheet metal... :-laf :-laf

Tomeygun... Do you think the new G56 shifter will work with the "cup smoothie" that Genos sells? How close does it come to the seat? On my 2001, I have to be careful when I shift the NV4500 into reverse, as it will hit anything that is in the drivers cup holder.

Yes, this truck was a 3. 73 gear'ed truck

And you should SEE the size of the rotiseriee (sp) I used -- that truck barely fit on it, and was quite hard to crank over :-laf

I have not tested that, I think it is a bit closer than the NV5600 - I will see if i can get some pics of the trans is like 4th gear to see how close

Just ran out to the garage and looked at my truck. Yep, Scott's right. Had me confused for a minute there - only had the truck for eight years. :D

That transmission sure looks like the same one that we have been working on here since the middle of last year on the M2's with the MB906. Just put a clutch in a MB transmission last week (using Sachs clutch) I believe we have another in the shop, will check it out tommorow.

I notice they went with "L" instead of "1" on the shifter. Does that mean DC is now endorsing starting off in 2nd unloaded (my owners manual says not to do this).
