Just did my first FF change... Not too bad of a job. . Did it from below. . Used A 1/2" drive with a universal joint and extension . .

From below. Drain canister. Unscrew the white drain tap til it drops. . I put a bucket under the diff and it drained right into it... . Then tighten the drain... unhook WIF sensor . . Use 1/2" drive wrench to loosen canister. It will drip down a little on the side. . when it is all the way loose, open the tap drain again to drain the rest out of the canister. . Then move the canister over by the firewall. . It comes down between the firewall and fuel lines. .

Filter pulls out easily. . slide new one in. . make sure it seats fully... Put on new O-ring. Lube with oil and screw canister back on going up by the firewall as before. . Not too bad. . Little messy but not bad.

Fuel Filter Change - 6.7L

A quick comment with regard to loosening the fuel filter from underneath with a 1/2" wrench/universal joint combo:

I was underneath my truck doing the same thing today and it suddenly dawned on me that the uninsulated and unfused hot feed terminal on the starter isn't all that far away. Add in a little splashed diesel and a slipped wrench from ground to that terminal, well you get the picture. I made a mental note that next time I will disconnect the batteries even though that isn't part of the official instructions. (I ultimately got in through the wheel well, although a much stubbier 1/2" extension would have made that access considerably easier. )

Bater, You have brought up a very good caution point. After your post I put a truck up on a lift today and ran a extension up to see how close the starter battery supply cable was to the extension and you were right, there is a possibilty of the extension hitting the battery cable. Good point.

Another thing to keep in mind when replacing the filter element is to remember to clean the filter housing before you install the filter element. In my opinion it does no good to install a new filter in a dirty housing.

Didn't notice the Pos. cable, will have to watch out for that. . but there is no draining fuel when you loosen it. . also you are not touching frame ground. . it Shouldn't do more than a mild spark like we all have done before... . also I just used it to loosen it. . not screw it all the way off. .

But the trick is to drain it first... then loosen it a little so there will be no spill. . then after it drops away a little, breaking the seal, drain it the rest of the way from the drain plug. . then angle it to the firewall to drop down between the fuel lines and the firewall. . All done from underneath on my creeper. . with no drenching down my arm... this seemed pretty good way to do it...
