First gen newbie in need of advice

Hey all first gen lovers I have a 2001 eth and recently purchased a 1990 cab and chasis with a flat bed. I had the fortune to get it cheap with a bad cylinder. The problem being that it had been torn down prior to my purchasing it and the fool who had it left the removed parts on the flat bed of the truck out in the weather. Unfortunately these parts included the injectors which are now extremely rusted, therefor I am trying to find the best source for some new injectors in which to put in the short block which I purchased out of a medium duty truck which had been victim to a fire, and I am also looking for a new electric element for in the fuel filter since apparently they managed to pull the wires out of it, and of course any other helpfull information would be appreciated thanks Seth

Hi Seth - welcome to the first gen section.



If you are talking about the water -in -fuel sensor that screws into the bottom of the filter, you can get that from Geno's for about $16.



As for the injectors - what are you planning on doing with the truck? do you want to bomb it maybe just a little? There are several options for injectors. Lots of us have installed the Bosch injectors that are known as the Power Wagon ones. Locas makes a set as well as several others. You can do a search and find more info on this. The injectors will run ballpark about $300 for a set.



Then you have gauges, exhaust, airfilter, pump adjustments, pump timing, etc, etc. LOTS of stuff to do! $$$$$$$

Well I have thought very little regaurding injectors and any inpute would be greatly appreciated, is there a substantial gain from them as in both milage and power like the 24 valvers? And of course the truck will recieve all the apropriate guages when the new engine is installed or else I may feel lost without the cockpit feel of all those guages like my 24 valver. And not to be stupid here but do the first gen trucks run a fuel heater like the 2nd gen? Thanks Seth

Get your new injectors from Piers at PDR, Big Don, City Diesel, or other folks that support this conference. Not only will you get a great price, you will get great support. Power Wagon injectors should run ya $280-$340, and Lucas injectors should run ya quite a bit more, $525 and up perhaps.



If more power, etc. , is not that interesting to you (or in the pocketbook), someone in here has to have a set they pulled from a 1990 you should be able to get for $50-$100 for the whole set.



I've got stock 1992 injectors available, but I am pretty sure they don't work in your application.

Also while I'm at it I was wondering if anyone had attempted adding a intercooler on one of these early models other than a banks system? Has anyone managed to take a stock intercooler from any other model of truck to fit?

Welcome to the 1St Gen forum...

Yes, I believe the truck does have a fuel heater and intake air heater.

The injectors you'll use are Bosch 185's or (similar) PW's, or Lucas (POD's)

The Lucas are the most HP bang for the buck, and will add roughly 60 RWHP. The 185's/PW's will add around 30RWHP.



I think at PDR (Piers Diesel Research) they are around $440 USD, and the 185's are about $399 USD.

For the money the Lucas (Prince of Darkness) nozzles are pretty nice.

As for intercoolers, I have read a few guys who have adapted an intercooler from one of the newer 1St Gen trucks to the earlier models. It takes a bit of work, mostly on the grille I think, but they will go in.

It does make a difference too, from what they have said.
