hello all. i recently came across a 90 model d250 with the cummins of course at a very good price. i mainly bought it for spare parts, and the engine. the truck came from an older gentelmen who bought it new,and retired it to his farm as a beater truck about three years ago. he believes one of his helpers may have ran it low on oil cause it suddenly quit running one day, after chking the oil they found it low[how much,?]needless to say it hasnt run since. i dont feel the low oil level hurt the engine do to the fact it turns over fine. i have spent a considerable amout of time bleeding the fuel sytem of any possible air,and have what i consider good fuel output to the injector's. with the fuel system tight, and cranking the engine over there is 0 smoke coming from the tail pipe. the only time the engine will attempt to fire is with a shot of starting fluid. sound like a weak injector pump? i would like to get the engine running and continue to use the truck as a beater,at least till i need the engine in a machine or something. thank for any advise...

Sounds like maybe the fuel solenoid is going south

I'd pull it out, remove the guts put the body back and see if it starts.

If we see you post "first gen won't shut down" then we'll know it was a successful test.

Hope this helps.

Definitely check the shut off solinoid as Jay suggest. That is the first thing (and least expensive to fix) to check when they won't go. If you still can't make it go, read the rather long post on the motor home from Don in Texas. His pump apparently isn't making enough pressure to crack the injectors, and that might be what you have but do the fuel shutoff solinoid first.

thanks guys, likely be a day or 2 before trying. i have tested to make sure there is voltage to the pump solenoid, even ran a direct wire to the pump, made no difference. 6. 2/6. 9/7. 3 pump solenoids make a clicking noise when activated. i assume the cummins would be no different, yet the solenoid makes no noise when i tried it. as mentioned the injectors are recieving a fair amount of fuel, maybe just not enough!

yet the solenoid makes no noise

For me at 63, the click is long gone but I can feel the pulse if I put my finger on the solenoid.

injectors are recieving a fair amount of fuel, maybe just not enough!

Open line volume is not the test. There must be enough pressure to crack the injector. The only way to know for sure is attach a (test) injector and see if it skeets. And by the way, that skeet is sufficient to penetrate the skin (some four thousand psi) , in fact cut. DON'T allow anyone to have a hand or anything else near the injector when you test one outside the cylinder.

thanks for the reply james. very eager to hear the old goat fire up,just afraid i'am looking at a pump job based on the talk with the previous owner. [he had little clue as to why it just quit],and if low oil was the problem like he thinks,i say it would be seiezed,or at least turning over slowly. the solenoid will definitley be my first thing to chk out, maybe it's just partially opening. trk has 180k on it,and at first inspection the pump appears to be original[very dirty to tell much].

chk'd the voltage on monday, got fire to the solenoid, just dont know if solenoid works. had time to play with it today,i removed the spring and plunger from the solenoid. before doing so i tried cranking it over a few times with a couple of injectors cracked open, still getting fuel to spurt out. afterwards i disasembled the solenoid, but noticed it was very hot to the touch[that normal?]. put the brass part back on the solenoid and tried a couple short cranks before battery started fadeing, still no runnie! will try again tommorrow.
