I expect to be done with the driveline portion of this project on friday of next week. I decided against a cheap paint job and have some questions. I have seen hundreds of Dodge pickups with flaking paint and gray primer showing. I have been told and I have noticed that the primer is slicker than monkey snot, and that the paint won't stick to it. So what needs to be done? Full sand to bare metal? What kind of primer and paint do you specify to have it last a while. My 1984 VW Vanagons paint is perfect and it has never seen the inside of a garage. I hate to just go to a paint shop and hand them the keys. I'll get screwed for sure.

I just figured it was the gray and white trucks that had the problem. The only place on my truck that the primer is showing is where the cb antenaas beat the paint off.

On finding a body shop I recommend you talk to a body shop and ask for some customers of theirs to talk to. Or find somebody that has a lot of body work done, someone that likes fixing up old cars. They will tell you who to go to.

I am fortunate, I have two friends here in Iowa that do body work and will take care of me when the need arises. I would recommend a similar color primer/paint combo. That way scratches are less noticable. Nothing worse then a red truck with light colored primer. Scratches are very noticable.

Good luck Ron, do you really think the drive train is "done"? :D

I know, I know, I catch it every time I say something like that. But If I go any farther on the motor I will start loosing lifespan or driveability. It's pretty good right where it is. But it is time to work on the ugly part. Not me, I mean the truck.

My 1990, (white in color) was peeling horribly. I currently have the cab sanded to bare metal. This was strictly my choice... . but at least now I know what I have.

I'm am using DuPont products. The bare metal will be sprayed with filling wash primer, we call it "green. " Then HI-build primer, the on to the base-clear. I'm using the Dupont Nason line. It wont be perfect, but it's a working truck. My main goal is to keep the rust away.

If the problem was like GM paint... the UV light penetrates the top coat which was the problem. Then an oxidation layer forms between the primer and top coat. The layer forces the top coat "up" and it looses grip to the primer. Also explains the slick primer feel. Kinda like a chalky dustlike smooth feel.

This sounds right. We have a white 93 here at work that is peeling very badly. The left side of the truck was repaired and repainted when it was about 1 1/2 years old and it isn't peeling at all. the rest of the truck is peeling except where something was covering the paint, like a sticker or painted on numbers and the like. Just my observations.

Hold on here! This isn't what DC had in mind? Wow, I thought I just had a cutstom paint job, I call it urban camoflauge, man now I'm really depressed, I guess I'll call Earl Shives in the morning, thanks.

WOW... . darn I been lucky... .

My brothers 92 has had the paint flake and chip off on the drivers door and the hood. In fact the hood, just about dead center, has flaked right down to bare metal.

I wonder if my 5 wax jobs a year ... (ok, 7 or 8 not counting touch-ups) has anything to do with it... . :D..... or maybe it's being head of OLOAC... hmmmmmmmm ... ;):D

Now that you went and said something, you'll be driving down the road tomorrow and the paint on your hood will come off in one big sheet :-laf

mine is blue and the hood nad roof was starting to show rust. The shop that painted it said that it needed to be bare metal as the new paint might not stick to the old primer

Amen, Brother!! I had a quarter sized missing paint spot turn into the entire hood and roof showing primer and rust within 18 months. It was a light blue and dark blue two tone. After it had rusted pretty good, I never worried about parking it when I worked on vacant houses down in "Cracktown. "

Hey guys there was no primer. What your seeing is the "dip", the finish never really had a chance to adhear with no primer, most of the big three were going through the same thing. Our government stepped in and told them to stop using paint solvents so what do they do, lets try water based paints  I've been through the same thing, the best thing to do is take it down and build it back up the correct way, it ain't cheap but you won't have the peeling problem again... ... .
