I've talked to a few people that tell me that the pumps on these trucks usually only last about 80k-100k miles. I'm not sure if mine has been replaced, but the truck has 140k on it so...
Is this true, and if so who sells the best modified pumps?

Don't know the normal life span, but the one on my Cummins has been replaced twice in a little over 600K miles (Speedo broke a 528K and was driven another 18 months before I pulled the motor out and rebuilt everything). Some of the posts I have read sugest somewere around 250K miles. I did get a rebuilt pump and had it tweaked at a cost of $900. The old one was total loss, it was pumping metal into the injectors and was leaking more diesel than the Cummins was burning, not to mention lots of smoke #ad
. Even with all those miles and a screwed up pump the truck could still burn off the duallys in a big way !

A one of a kind truck(Wish Dodge would build a new Crew Cab in 1 ton. Last year for the Crew Cab was 1985)If you want to know why I did all of this, 2 kids, one on the way and I can't stand Ford and Chevy. Kyle Hoover ,Fruitport, MI

Terry, my truck also has 140 on it and my pump is still going strong. I have my fuel turned all the way up to see if it will die and it hasn't yet. When mine goes (if it ever does) I would like to try to convert to a P7100 inline pump. I have never heard of the performance of aftermarket/rebuilt pumps, but they do make them. They are pretty pricey though. If your pump isn't turned up much or at all, you may get a pretty good life out of it, but if you hang out here much, you probably won't want to leave everything stock.

I'm not sure the average lifespan of a pump, but I think it's around 150-200 thousand miles. I have looked at the aftermarket pumps and BD has a pretty nice pump with a few mods. It will set ypu back around 900-1000 dollars including the core.

My local certified Bosch rebuilder says under normal conditions you can expect 150k to 200k on these pumps. They also told me that they have seen pumps that have had Stanadyne Performance Formula used on them run well over 300k. The one drawback is that the pump will run until it actually falls apart. Mine is still running strong at 127k and has been turned up.

I've heard 150-200K. I run the standyne tru mine about once a month. It has been turned upo some and will melt the tires off if I want to. I do not expect failure in the near future, but if it lets go, I am going with the 230 hp verison of the same pump. I thought about the inline pump mod, but it is expensive and the cam has to be removed to swap the front cover. The inline pump cover is stronger to support the weight of the inline pump (@50 lbs. ) versus our rotary pump at 20lbs. or so. You can trade yours for a 230 hp pump for @$800-$1000.

long may ye run

Big Don I agree with you on the 230hp pump. Talked with a gentleman who says that the same pump can be ordered from Cummins (rebuilt) that goes up to 265hp. It was on a Marine version. Mine appears to be holding up quite well at 225,000++ miles. Has only had additives added every now and then.

Mechanic says that truck will probably not meet EPA requirements with that higher HP pump. But what they don't know won't hurt them!!!! As long as you don't smoke like a chimney, who would know ??

My 93 had 172k on it when I took the pump into Midwest Diesel, a Bosch shop, @ Ft. Dodge, IA for a rebuild. The owner said there
wasn't much wrong with it, no noticeable or unusual wear; except that I had the aneroid diaphram turned up quite a little. He said that my pump, as well as many others, had been replaced by a recall, probably early in its service??????? He also said that most VE44 pumps seem to run 150-250k between rebuilds, if you take care of them, as another post indicated. His recommendation was not to underestimate the long term effects of quality fuel, clean fuel, clean filters, draining the fuel filter once a week to keep water out of the pump. He said he couldn't see any unusual wear caused by my fuel adjustments & reset everything 10% over specs per my request. They have some local sled pulling tractors running out of their shop, so they're not surprised or upset when a customer wants more power, all they want to know is how much! The charge to
rebuild my pump, check, & adjust calibration
was around $350 and I've been very satisfied with the results. I've put 6k on since the rebuild. I've used Lucas fuel additive for the last 10k, but have no idea if any was ever used before I bought it.

My first VE44 pump overhaul was done at 152,000 mi, when the truck was 9 years old. My second overhaul was done only a year and a half later at 194,000 mi. My pump settings were and still are at the factory settings. I think if your truck has over 175,000 miles and you have not have the pump overhauled, I would recommend doing so before it leaves you stranded.

I had mine freshened at around 140k.
It was starting to "lope" at an idle and the throttle shaft was badly worn. Oher than that, they said it was in pretty good shape.

Thanks guys! It sounds like I probably have some life left in my pump. Can anyone recommend a good shop in washington state for pump mods?

We have seen the pumps go from less than 20K to over 500,000 miles. However, they usually end up leaking or having some linkage parts wear out before the pump itself wears out.

Often, by the time you have gotten 300K miles or more on them, they are enough out of calibration that rebuilding them will make a difference worth having.

I'm going to replace mine soon (160,000 miles). I've got a banks system, 14cm turbo and exhaust, but performance wise it just doesn't cut it. I get about 21 lbs of boost but I expected alot more and based on their ads. Talking to others I believe my fuel pump isn't up to speed and that's the part that really counts. Enterprize Engine (800)783-4929 will square you away with a new pump, turned up, for $900 plus core. I'd change the injectors also while your at it. There are alot of good shops out there so check'em all out.

Good luck!
