i have a question about first gen. exhaust systems. are there any aftermarket turbo back 4 inch systems out there , and who makes them? where do you go to buy them?

Hi dcava,

When I needed a new exhaust system a few years back, I also wanted 4" tubes. I ended up with a Flowmaster model 17309 3-1/2" setup. less back pressure is always good on a diesel. However, there comes a point of diminishing return, and unless you are running over a certain horsepower say in the 225HP and up range, you probably do not require the bigger tubes. When I noticed that the stock downpipe on my truck was smaller than 4" I decided against the work and $ that would have been involved with fitting that size exhaust.

Would a 4" exhaust be better than the out of the box Flowmaster kit on my truck? Yes, especially if you replace the stock downpipe with a larger diameter one. Is it worth it? You make the call.

Source Automotive and Stan's Headers both offer full, turbo back 4" exhaust systems. I run the Stan's system on my 92 and like it a lot. All other 4" exhaust systems for the 1st gens (that I've seen) use a 3" (stock size) downpipe and go to 4" under the cab.

Hello to you all,

I have to eat a little crow. Definitely buy the 4" system SChandler is recommending instead of the Flowmaster I have on my truck.

At the time, I could not find an inexpensive way to get a 4" system with the downpipe, so I assumed the 3-1/2" Flowmaster was cheaper than the 4" pipes from Stan's and Source Automotive. I just checked, the Flowmaster is actually more expensive! Can't say if one or the other is better made, but bigger pipes at a lower price wins in my book.

The people that have went to a full 4" system have seen EGt's at WOT drop around 100 dgrees. It doesn't matter if you use a muffler or not.

I have a Stan's system.

I had a Swampy System on my nonIC 91- complete turbo back. Made a noticeable drop in EGT along with actually being QUIETER than the stock 3" straight pipe (the 4" SS had a muffler, but was only for looks).

Pinnacle Performance Diesel Exhaust did mine.

Excellent customer service. A year after I installed the kit, I stopped at their shop. They didn't think I'd done it quite right, so they ripped it out and replaced the whole thing so it looked worthy to carry their name.

No charge.

Wow.

Contact MadMax here, he used to be building 4" firstget downpipes, I bought one a year and a half ago. I believe his comany name is ASA Modifieds, He was in a great state of flux a while back with moving to a new house and property, so I don't know if he put them on hold or what.

Just thought I would throw out another option for those just looking for a downpipe to build a system off of.

Try these guys. Did a fine job for me several years ago. Can't find there web site, though. DBF

I have a 4in Bully Dog Exhaust system that i bought from 4 wheel part about a year ago. I bought it for $400 and it increased my horsepower and lowered my EGT temperature 200 degress. So i would recommend Bully Dog.

Went with a Stans Headers down pipe and t case pipe. That was all I needed for the stacks.

Seems to be a nice quality item. Bends aligned perfect and amazing just how close that thing is to the t case and crossmember! Wow!

Recommended to anyone looking for a 4" kit.

I built my own using an HX-40 downpipe for a 2nd gen truck and flex pipe to get around the transfer case and a few misc bends that I picked up from Six States to get over the axle and out to a shiny 5" stack tip. It was a lot easier on my 93 2wd cause it was a straight shot to the axle.

I am only aware of Stan's and Source Automotive systems. Both are highly recommended amoung local 1st gen owners. I have not gone to a 4" yet, but plan to look into these companies.

If you are a 4wd, make sure your front leafs are good! ;)

Mine are so sagged I am rubbing the 4" on the front driveshaft. :(
