It was time for the first service of my truck which was new to me a couple of months ago. It now has 105,000 miles on it. I changed the fuel filter first and found it to be black. I was expecting this, so no big deal. What I didn't expect was to have to crank it for so long after I pumped the lift pump more than 100 times. (No typo) Is this normal, or am I going to have to find a better way to fill the filter? The oil change was straight forward, even used the bag over the filter method. Worked slick. The real problem came with the trans filter change. I ordered my filters from Geno's (great service) and they sent me a filter that was a very thin yellow fuzzy square-with-a-corner-cut-off looking thingy. When I dropped my pan (yuk) I had the one that has a metal backed plastic housing with the filter inside. I was able to find the proper one in town, a Wix unit so no big deal, but what gives with the difference. Two shops in town tried to sell me the one I already got from Geno's even after verifying year of truck. Any ideas? The truck runs just as it did before which is fine with me. It tells me nothing was past due. Thanks for your input.

Ok, I'll bite...

The filter on my trans (new unit from Dodge in '99) is the one Genos sent you. I don't knoe the difference. Do they mount the same? They might be interchangeable...

The fuel filter change. 135 times. I've done it 4 times now. The least I've pumped is 119, the most 135. Pretty consistant, eh? Did you have the bleed screw loose or out at the top so you could see when it's full? Mine starts right up, might sputter a couple times but it fires pretty quick.

DB: On my '96, I pour diesel into the filter before installation, so I only have to punch the button a few times. Works for me. That's with a Fleetguard FS1253.

Ok I'll bite too

I just changed my ATF out since the 1000mile mark since the DTT transmission upgrade and I switched to Amsoil ATF+4

The yellow fuzzy filter is the better filter to use since it will flow better than the oem filter which seems more restrictive.

And the yellow filter is 1/3 the cost too :ccol:

Geno comes through again :)

I would check your lift pump to make sure it not dead, I only have to crank for a couple of seconds after filter changes.

Hard cranking is going to kill your starter

Thanks for the replies. I don't have the spin on filter, so wasn't sure how I was going to fill the housing with fuel without spilling all of it by the time I got it back into place. It's pretty tight.

I thought my lift pump might be going on me, but I was able to drain fuel out after only 3 or 4 pumps, so it does move fuel. Sounds like I stopped just short of full. I'll try the bleed screw next time.

The filter kinda had me stumped. I didn't want to get the whole nine yards back together just to find out I had the wrong one in. Do they mount the same? I kept the "yellow fuzzy" one, so it's of no loss. I would have called Genos, but they were closed. Anyways, all is good with the truck, so I can't be that far off. Thanks for the replies
