Oo. I just got the results back from my first oil analysis on the truck with 15,500 on it. Blackstone reported that my new engine was breaking in far better than average and they congratulated me! :) They said my oil filter and Air filter were doing exceptionally well. Absolutely no fuel or coolant found in the oil. THis was using Shell ROtella T CJ4. All wear metals were below universal averages and balanced.

The only portion that was higher than universal averages was the Potassium. Mine was 11 and universal ave is 2... What does that say about the engine?? THanks!!:D

I had 3,000 miles on the oil when I took the sample. When the results came back they said I could run the oil to 4-5,000. My main concern was to double ck for coolant in the oil as well as fuel.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the owner's manual say you can go 7,500 between oil changes? Since they're telling you you can only go 4-5000, I wonder what they would tell you if you ran a cycle of the old school CI-4+ through it? My guess is that you may be able to go longer because the old school CI-4+ has more detergents and additives in it. I personally won't go over 6000 between changes, but i'm using the old school CI-4+ Delo 400. What do you guys think?

I had high potassium on my '03 the first time I sent in a sample. They said it may have been due to fuel additives or a symptom of coolant in the oil.

I sent in 5 or 6 more samples from the truck over the next 50k miles and it was never high again. Fluke number, maybe?

In most cases, a coolant leak into the crankcase oil will bring a detectable and often sizeable concentration of copper. Companion elements typically also appear from additives that are formulated with the glycol or introduced as a supplement into the coolant. These additive elements could be various combinations of sodium, silicon, potassium, molybdenum and boron, among others. It is always good to baseline the antifreeze to determine the normal family of elements found in its formulation. When the same relative concentrations of elements, along with copper, are found in the used engine oil, one should rightfully suspect a coolant leak.

However, if your report showed no signs of Glycol in your oil, then I would suspect the Rotella T has the potassium formulated in it, which is uncommon.

All new Cummins engines show K early in their life. I have not heard of definite answer for it but some say it is from MLS gasket in the 3rd gens. Every UOA on a low mileage engine has shown it, mine dropped to single digit numbers at 28k. Don't stress over it unless you have other wear that can be contributed to anti-freeze or a positive test for it.
