OK, so I’m admitting my ignorance here, but when I changed my oil last night the stuff that came out was green! Is this normal for diesel engines? I’ve never seen green oil before. The Delo 400 I put in is just regular looking oil. I’ve been using Stanadyne fuel additive, could this have discolored the oil?

I have seen mine look slightly green. Especially when the light hits it. We are not talking bright tree green, but more of a dark olive looking green. Hope this helps

ps- I use ROTELLA

The only oil I have seen that has even a slight tinge of green is Kendall GT-1. Old formula Pennzoil (mid 80's) also had this green tint. This is not even a remotely bright green but more of a DARK alge green.

I have been told that this is because of the base stock they use in making the oil. Kendall is one of the only refiners that still uses oil from the Pensylvania, Ohio, and Virginas area. The oil here has more of a green tint than the normal DARK brown to mostly black color make-up. Of course this could be a total B. S. story but it did come from an engineer I know !?!?!?

I run Kendall in every gas car I have ever owned plus Offshore and Drag boats. Mercury Marine use to specify Kendall for their engines, and straight weight 30 or 40. I don't know if they still do. It is getting hard to find here in the Houston area. Hope this helps... ... .

I had a 100 watt light bulb shining on the drain hole about 1 foot away. This probably made it look greener than it would have otherwise; but man, with this light hitting it, it was bright green. Weird.

It is probably a green dye put in the oil. Ford does this to help find oil leaks. If you shine an ultra-violet light on oil with the dye in it, it really stands out and makes it easier to chase oil leaks. This is a common practice on new Fords.

A agree with Ram4Sam. Maybe Cummins is putting the dye in the oil so its easy to find leaks when they are test run at the factory. It does not hurt anything.

Royal Puple Engine Oil is Dark Purple. Great Oil! #ad

Hemi and Sam, mine has 56K on it and the oil has a green tint to it at change time. No antifreeze in the oil either, just weird.

Oil!!????????
I'm thinkin ANTI-FREEZE. How green was it? Check your level of fluids.
If your oil is above full, or your overflow tank is low, DO NOT DRIVE IT.

Don't worry about the Green. Mine was the same way when I changed it @ 2250 Miles. mentioned it to Blackstone when I sent the oil in. They said they could not detect anything in the oil that would be harmful. It's most likley just a way DC marks their oil.

Puff, I use Rotella too and mine looks the same. I haven't worried about it. My dad has a 12V and his Rotella does not turn green. Weird huh? I am thinking it is the dye from the fuel staying in the oil, but I could be all wet with that idea.

Yea. What if the sample was wrong!!!??

Maybe they sent the wrong one back??It happens in hospitals, a guy goes in for a broken toe and they amputate the whole leg by mistake!
I'd sample again, but I'm paranoid.

Gene

Ok So if the sample was wrong it would have shown up again in the next samples taken @ 5230 miles. That samples came back clean also and that oil had no traces of green (Dello 400). Hope that all concerned at ease.

Last year my engine boiled out the coolant. I checked a few things first. Then pulled out the dipstick. It was almost the same color as antifreeze. I ended up having it towed to the shop.
I was sure I blew a head gasket or something. Even the mechanic had never seen such green oil. He took an oil sample to the Cat lab for analysis. There was no trace of antifreeze or fuel dilusion. The oil was just fine. The Lab did say that Rorella tends to turn green then over to black in some cases. Call up the lab you send an analysis and ask them about the characteristics about the oil you use.
I supect it over heated because of a bad t-stat. I put the revised t-stat in and stays steady now.

PUFF,
I CHANGED MY OIL AT 800mi AND IT ALSO HAD A GREEN TINT TO IT. I BELIEVE THAT IT'S A DYE THAT IS USED IN THE OIL FROM THE FACTORY. FILLED HER UP WITH ROTELLA AND A NEW FLEETGUARD. WE'LL SEE HOW IT LOOKS AT ABOUT 3000mi.

I have a 2001. 5 Cummins ETH with about 4500 miles on it. I changed the oil at about 3200 miles and it looked slightly green also. I figured it's OK.
