Today I did the first oil change on my 2011 2500. While it was fairly easy to do I was not expecting the massive rush of oil that came out once the drain plug was removed. I had the oil fill cap in the engine bay removed and sitting cockeyed in the hole. When the plug came out oil went all over my arm and hit me in the face, lol. . I had a little spill and some cleanup afterwards. I installed a Fumoto drain valve so I don't see this happening again. I couldn't find a 5/8 in dia hose clip to install on the valve to keep the latch from opening so I used a 5/8 dia rubber o ring which slipped right over the nipple part and fits just right into the pivot arm slot blocking it from opening. I'm all set up for the next change. .

By the way, is there anybody else who hates these cable type dipsticks besides me? I found out I get a different level reading by flipping the handle around 180 degs. I miss those all metal dipstick, they were very easy to read.

I've another question that may be obvious to others: when you remove the dipstick, clean it and re-insert, how far do you insert, all the way or until just before it 'clicks' into place?

I have always inserted it all the way down into the tube, as far as it will go. I have never seen anything that says to not fully insert it. Older style dipsticks (all metal) never had that o-ring seal that "clicks" into place when fully inserted.

I didn't have that on mine, it was the very same as the 5. 9 it replaced, remove the drain plug almost all the way out then just quickly pull it out of the way, no mess at all, better luck on your next one.

This is my first diesel truck and I had a similar experience with my first oil change. I expected it would be different than mu previous gassers, with 3 gal. of oil and all, but I definitely was not prepared for the volume of oil I was about to meet. Have since cut a 5 gal bucket to fit under the truck with a space for me to reach in and flip the lever on the Fumoto drain plug and all is good now. I almost look forward to changing the oil, almost.

Ha! Me too, since I installed the valve I too am looking forward to the next oil change. I anticipate not having much clean up afterwards this time. I think the smaller opening of the valve will also help slow down the massive flow when using the drain plug.
