I am getting ready to change the oil for the first time and was going to change the fuel filter also. How difficult is this and how often shouild I change it

Fuel filter is a snap... I assume in your question your asking how often for the fuel filter? The owners manual says 15,000 miles but I change mine at every 5,000 mile oil change. With this new ULSD some of the crud from the tanks is getting washed into the fuel. You will have happier injectors and better fuel economy if you change it more frequently. Genos sells the Filters for 14. 00 so not a lot of $$$$ for a healthy engine. . The procedure on how to do it takes about 10 minutes and if you do a search you can get all the steps!! If you want them again, PM me and I would be happy to give them to you...

Hint for the oil filter:

Loosen the filter with the proper wrench just enought to get it to spin, but do not remove. Place a plastic grocery bag over the filter and spin it off by hand with the bag around it... . helps keep the oil from spilling down.

A 1 gallon zip-lock bag works even better. Also, if you let the vehicle sit overnight (or at least some time), about 1/2 of the oil in the filter is siphoned out, making less of a mess if you tip it too far.

Be sure to put 1 quart of new oil in the new filter before you screw it back on. One quart in filter, 11 quarts in motor.

not quite half, but you will be down about 3/4" oil in the filter, so you can tilt it a wee bit without making a slick

Temporarily I add some heater hose to the fuel filter drain. This extends the drain into my waste container. Leaves no mess on the front axle while draining. I usually start the fuel filter drain then move onto the oil. When I'm done with the oil change the fuel canister is completely empty. For the oil I use a large freezer bag similar to what others have posted. Be sure to use CJ4 rated oil. In your case CI4 would work but is very difficult to find. I would buy from Geno's if Cummins Northwest wasn't so close.

Of the 4 CTD I have owned the first oil filter change is the worst. the factory filter is put on by Arnold Schwatzenagar with a cheater pipe. Good luck.

Oil Change Went Quite Easily, arnold Didn't Put On The Oil Filter But I Think He May Have Done The Drain Plug. i Used Rotella T Synthetic . Was This A Good Choice?
