How many miles did you wait until the first oil change, and did you do a filter the first time, or did you wait until the second change ?

Also, should I wait a while before going to a synthetic oil ?

My truck has 3000 miles now, and the first 1000 was mostly towing (not by design. )

Thanks for any ideas.

1000 miles on first oil change and filter

1000 miles on second change and filter

will go about 4000 miles or so on current oil, will change before wet weather hits, and probably change transmission and differential at the same time - plus add Frantz bypass filter, and at least consider switching to some name brand diesel approved synthetic - unless I decide the Cummins isn't broke in enough for the synthetic...

I don't like to leave the factory-fill oil in too long - too much machining and rough edges getting broke off things to be leaving it in the engine too long...

You are doing fine combo tow no tow and 3000 mi I would change it now and filter to . After the next 3000 if not towing stretch it out if you want to 7500 , if towing 3000 . wait to you get at least 10000 mi for change to synthetic oil approved filters only . Ron in LOUISVILLE KY:D

Damon,

I changed my oil 1st time at 500 miles. I was really surprised when I did as there were minute metallic particles in it. I then shifted to 3000 mile intervals. I now use syn oil. I switched at 9000 miles. It is recommended, somewhere, that you wait to change to syn when you are in 10-15K mile range. Depends on how you use your truck as to when it is "broken in"
