I attacked it from the bottom. Used a socket to get the filter loose, then slid a bread sack over it and unscrewed it. It was easy on my 4X4. I can see where the two wheel drive guys might want to come from the top. A long extension, a break over bar and the socket, done deal. A tip for those not in the know, there is an injector resting right under the oil fill hole. One of the mechanics at the dealer advised not to use a metal funnel when pouring in oil, he claimed the injector could be shorted out. I could see that if the sharp edge of the funnel cut into the wiring. Anyway, I make it a practice to use a fairly heavy plastic funnel on mine. Glen

Glen,

I was told the same thing about the vulnerablity of the injector by a sharp object. I was told this by a really good tech. Iff I had the oil changed at a garage, I would tell them about it so they would be careful with the filler from the bulk oil dispenser.

Hi all,

(Sorry hit wrong key) I had my first" free" oil change at 2400miles,Dealer used a non-fluted filter. What did you guys say the difference was if any?(fluted vs. non-fluted) I think their just getting rid of the old style filters?Any mechanical difference? Thanks,Pat

There is no difference in the filters. They just put the fluted end on the new ones for the 03 so you can take them off from the bottom. You can use the one they put on on the 03 you just have to take off the air filter hose.

Bucket?

I always slid a 5 gallon bucket under my '01. 5 to drain the oil. I'm about to do my first oil change on my '03, and was wondering if I can do the same thing. Anyone tried? Thanks.

I also use a 5 gallon bucket to drain the oil in. My 2003 looks like it sits a little lower than the 2001 I had, but the clearance under the engine oil pan appears to be roughly the same based on my bucket.

It depends, what color is the bucket?

My first oil change attempt, AND IT FAILED!!!!!!!!

I did like Vaughn MacKenzie said and took the turbo snorkel off, and used a strap wrench. At about a 1/16 of a turn at a time I finally got it loose enough to use my hand.

I luckily set it in my old 7qt oil pan to drain. I then filled my Fleetguard LF3970 filter with oil and tried to put it on, after a few attempts I knew something was wrong. The new filter has about a one inch hole. the factory one has about a 3/4 inch hole.

I re-filled old filter with oil, re-installed it and now I wait until NW Cummins is open on Monday.

Wrong filter??? Now THAT would really chap a feller! I ordered mine as a kit from Geno's Garage and they all fit, thankfully. At least you were lucky and didn't destroy your old filter getting it off. How hard was it to get that snorkel off the turbo? That looks like it would be an excellent method. I usually do mine from underneath.

The snorkel tube is super easy to remove. Just loosen two hose clamps and pull off. The lower one was spun around next to the fender well so it was hard to reach but it is easy for Monday nights oil change.

Did my first oil change on the '03 today. The gorillas at the factory were at work again. It took a 3' pry bar on the strap wrench to break the filter loose. It was actually more difficult than the first change on my '01. 5. Other than that all went well.

On a side note, the blow by on the '03 is much less. I don't get to smell any of the sweet Rosmella T with this truck! :p

BTW, I used a red bucket DIESELMAN! :D

Noticed the same thing with my 02 versus my 2000. Don't hardly notice the Rosemella. :( I miss that smell :)
