when folks are pulling these engines to freshen them up, how is the iron?

do you see crosshatch after 300K miles? :) you do in saab engines

do you automatically toss pistons & use a new set?

IM not really getting any answers on the stem seals in my other post

I guess it would be prudent of me to run compression & then put in stem seals if the compression is Ok

it acts like stem seals & uses oil does the same thing with a fresh turbo

Oh BTW my truck is an 89 C&C & I have no freaking idea whatsoever how many miles are on the truck

it says 74K now but could be that or 570K for all I know

anyway any help would be appreciated

I helped my friend do a head gasket on his '89, 475k miles on it. The cylinders looked like new. Crosshatch, barely a lip at the top, great shape!

I wouldn't toss pistons with out checking the clearance. Most of the time you can do a re-ring and you're good. Or do nothing. I agree on the compression check, 1st thing to do.

You could change the stem seals on yours. You don't need to pull the head or anything to do it. Just bring the piston up, compress the spring, and pop the keeper off. The valve will sit on the piston while you swap seals. I did this when I did my 60lb springs. It worked great.

A word of caution, put a rag around the spring area so you don't lose a keeper. ;)

I have read in that a compression test doesn't mean much on a Cummins. The better test for ring issues is for blowby pressure.

This is discussed very often on boatdiesel.com
