I'm wondering what the first year of the small Jeep Cherokee was. 1983?

When the small one came out is that when they started calling the big one the Grand Cherokee?

When did they start making 4 door versions of the little Cherokee?

What is the curb weight of a little Cherokee?

1984 according to kbb.com... . they had 2/4 door models.

It's probably 1983. 5 or something like that...

Minimum curb weight is 2819#... probably a stripped 4-banger.

They had a Grand Wagoneer and a Wagoneer (big 'ole ugly things. . ) back then.

HTH,

Matt

On edit: Good luck finding one that is not all rusted out... . :D

Actually, rust free cars are pretty common here in California, even of that vintage. You can't swing a dead Cat (even a 3208) without hitting an old Cherokee, it seems. Thanks for the info. 2819# is not too bad. I bet a Mercedes 5 cyl TD would move that well enough.

Did you get the curb weight data from kbb.com also?

The XJ Cherokee was first introduced in the fall of 1983 (1984 model year) in 2 and 4 door configurations, 2 and 4 wheel drive with either a 2. 5L 4cyl, 2. 8L V6 or a 2. 1L Renault turbodiesel.

The listed shipping weight for a 1987 4cyl 5 speed 4 door is 2983 lbs and for an 87 6 cyl 5 speed 4 door it's 3126.

The ZJ Grand Cherokee was an all new platform introduced in 1993 to replace the SJ Grand Wagoneer that was discontinued after 1992. The SJ Cherokee was discontinued after 1982 to make way for the XJ Cherokee.

FYI, the 2 door and 4 door XJ Cherokee have the exact same wheelbase (101. 4")
