I stopped by a Dodge dealer in Aurora, Missouri today to shop for a new CTD 2003 ram and was told by the salesman that I could order a new truck with the new Five speed automatic in it. He said the trans was made by Mercedes-Benz to handle the power and torque of the new HO engine! He said the truck would take about five weeks to get in. Any of you know the story on this new trans?? My truck is for sale in the classifieds on this site and I'd sure like to have the NEW Ram! You guys are lucky! Sam

Your salesman is talking complete nonsense. The subject has been discussed repeatedly on this site. If you do a search for 48RE or HO automatic you'll probably find lots of information.

The transmission to be installed behind the Cummins HO is a MOPAR 48RE, a revised and strengthened version of the earlier 47RE which has been installed behind the Cummins engine for years. It has three forward speeds plus overdrive.

I think the transmission you are referring to is the 545RFE. It is not available with the Cummins engine option, only the Hemi.

A long time ago, I learned to wear hip boots and carry a big shovel when talking to car salesman! Do your homework, know what's available and know what you want before entering the dealership doors. Also, know the factory invoice prices and try not to muddy the deal with a trade-in. Sell your old vehicle yourself if at all possible.

Hey Guys,

I am a Dodge Truck salesman. I understand where you're coming from... ..... I've only been selling since last August. I am single handedly trying to change all the B. S. being handed out. The 5 speed auto is for the gassers only and is an incredible transmission... ... . The automatic H. O. is still aways off from being available. If I don't know the answer to a question I say I don't know but will find out... ... I despise liars..... Have any of you ever lied to a car salesman before? LOL

The HO/Automatic "still aways off"? I ordered mine 2 weeks ago, and some are scheduled for delivery - I understand - early January.

There were reports quite a while back that the Mercedes W5A800 5-speed automatic would be available with the V10 and Cummins. The "800" refers to torque capacity in Newton-meters, which translates to 590 lb-ft. DC dropped the idea because the transmission was designed for high-rpm gas engines, not low-rpm diesels.

Dodge if you are listening you need to name your transmission. it is a marketing tool that will help lift your image of producing a terrible transmission. "torqueshift" "allsion" instead of 48re how about "6c powercore" or something. WAKE UP! lets get on the ball D/C. I think i may try to get on with D/C it seems like they need some help.
