2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Fix for stuck Zerk fittings.

This is probably not new to most but thought that it was worth sharing since my last post on the problem alot of people seemed to have the same problem.



I had one of my zerk fitting that was appearantly frozen or rusted shut. COuld not get grease into it no matter how hard I tried.



My solution was this and it was very quick and easy.



1) wire brush the zerk to get as much of the road grim, etc off of it.

2) give it a quick spray of WD40. Not too much as I dont know if it will effect the bushings. let it sit for a few minutes.

3) clean the top of the zerk with a scotch brite pad to get off the rust, etc.

4) use a small finish nail or other similar instrument and gentally tap on the ball of the zerk with a hammer and the nail. Acouple of taps should free it up.

5) grease till ur hearts content!.



ALso I have read other posts about drilling and tapping other areas to install zerks and grease. If anyone has info on this or has done it, please let me know the areas and the procedure.



I'm takening a month off work for the birth of mine and my wifes first child which is due any day, so I figure after a the first week my wife will be begging me to get out of the house. Figure I can do all the stuff I've been wanting to do to my truck but have not had the time.

You can also buy a zerk cleaning tool for under $10 that you attach to the zerk like the grease gun coupling and hit with a hammer. High pressure shock clears them out. If a zerk has been neglected for a long time and the grease dries sometimes the only recourse is to replace the zerk.



Sure you can easily put a zerk on your other joints as long as you can get at them with a drill. Some require removing the tires while turning the wheel sharp. Just buy some self tapping zerks from the auto parts, drill into the thin metal cover opposite the stud end of the joint and screw the zerk in.

Usually a little heat will open 'em up too.
