Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fixed? beginning of LP saga

Well i took my truck into the dealer today because the lift pump gave out. They installed a new pump in the tank. I get 8psi at idle and can draw it down to 3 at WOT. This doesnt sound good. What are my options for bring my psi up? Can i install another pusher pump in front of the tank on the framerail and still be under warranty if the LP or VP44 fail?



any ideas?

I don't know what the fix is for it. My dad got the same thing before he spoke with me. We are voiding his warranty and putting his stock module back in. From there, we will use an engine mounted mechanical pump.

Not sure about being under warranty... probably not, but you can install a pusher pump, say 8psi on the frame. My dad did and it works great after the dealer installed the in-tank pump on his. He idles and cruises in the 14-15 range. WOT is around 11 I believe.

I also had the in-tank pump installed under warrenty. However I got tired of "backing off the throttle" to avoid seeing -Zero psi- under very moderate acceleration. Ended up purchasing the Fass II pump. Idle now is around 15 1/2 to 16 PSI and WOT stays around 15 psi.

I believe I'll have to get the actual details from my dad if you want them. Evidently the dealer installed a relay to energize the new in-tank pump when they installed it. My dad used the output line from that relay to energize his OWN relay to run his supplemental pump. So when one pump is energized, the next relay is energized running his pump. He told me a few months ago but I forgot the exact info.



If you want the more precise details, email me and I can get him to write it up and reply back to you.



He did say that when he was testing his new pump, he actually had it running withOUT the in-tank pump and it did pull fuel. So if the in-tank pump dies, it seems like the other pump can still pull fuel.



He used 3/8" lines and fittings from the tank output port to the pump and all the way to the FF. The vulcan big line kit (lines only) does not improve pressures enough when used with just an in-tank pump that is sorely lacking in pressure to begin with. You will want a pusher if you want pressures over 8lb... let alone over 10-12 during normal cruising. So if you go with the vulcan kit, make sure you get the one that includes the lines AND an ~8lb pump, not a pump that pushes 16-18 or your total pressures will be well over 20. Not usually recommended.

get the vulcan kit. best money i ever spent on my truck-besides the cup smoothie
