I had an exhaust drone from day one and decided to see if I could quiet it down with a 4" system. I went with the Magnaflow down-pipe back system to hopefully get rid of the drone. Well, this did nothing but change the rpm band the drone was in and make it a deeper note that really made your head hurt.

I talked to Rip and he suggested another muffler all the way forward. This was 2 months ago and I finally got around to handling it. I called a performance muffler shop in town and they said Dodge Cummins are very bad in the drone department. I took it over and they put a 14" (I think) Magnaflow up front and man this thing is awesome. It still sounds awesome out the tail pipe, but is quieter than it was stock. No drone at any speed and life is good. They also welded on my 5" tip so this thing looks and sound great now. Oo.

How about posting the PN of the muffler, and how far from some reference point (turbo, back of engine etc. ) the front of the muffler is.

Jman... am I to understand that you are running 2 mufflers now?? a magnaflow where the stock one was and one up front?? you dont know what kind though huh??

What rpm did you get the drone when it was stock?

My drone with the stock system was in the 67-70 mph area with 3. 73 gears so right in the area of 2000 rpm is I remember right. You could drive 65 or 75+, just no where in between It was very annoying, but wasn't as bad as when I went with the Magnaflow 4" "down-pipe back" system.

Yes, I am now running 2 Magnaflow Mufflers. I bought the Magnaflow system that replaces everything from the down-pipe back. It includes a 30" muffler that is in the stock location and I added another one in front of that in the area you would normally find a resonator. The second muffler is also a Magnaflow just shorter. I will call Monday and see if I can get the p/n of the shorter muffler if you are interested. I believe it is about 14" long. I will get some measurements and post them later today or tomorrow as to where they put the "shorty".

Great! Thanks! Maybe next time I got to Denver I'll stop in Parker and see your rig and give it a listen. My "drone" isn't bad but it could be lessened and I wouldn't mind. 1800 rpms is quiet and so is 2200. Right around 2000 is where it is. 2200 is 75 mph and uses too much fuel for me so I usually back off to 1800 or so.

Hey Jman, what muffler shop did you use? I have a 51" Donaldson I would like welded in and am looking for a shop around Parker. Thanks!

Back pressure

I'd like to know the back pressure on this system relative to stock set up. Could be defeating the whole purpose of a full 4 inch system.

The Magnaflow mufflers are straight through 4" mufflers so I don't think backpressure is a problem. The muffler shop I used is AA performance muffler and brake over off Broadway just south of Hampden. They were very helpful and got things done quickly as soon as I got there. They are a Magnaflow dealers and have the big stainless tips if you are interested in dressing it up a bit.

OK guys I'm back. Sorry I didn't get the info you wanted in a more timely manner, but it got buuuussssyyy around here. The 14" Magnaflow is 24" behind the crossmember and the part # for the XL series is #13970. This is not a polished stainless, but is stainless. It really is a joy to drive now so all of you with the noise problem, give it a try. It still makes some noise when you stand on it so don't be afraid of it being too quiet. :p
