This guy like to hear the turbo whistle

Ford 6.9 needs injector pump --DC area

Is there any "turning up" for these engines short of bolting on a turbo? And if we do slap a pump on it--what else needs to be done?

A friend of mine bought an '86 6. 9---I keep telling him that the best bet is dropping a 5. 9 into it.

We've searched high and low, not much info on these suckers.

About the only thing that you get turning up the fuel on a non-turbo engine is more smoke. I wouldn't add a after market turbo on it because it really isn't set up internally for it. Those engines have no piston oil squirters and they use enough oil without a turbo.

These engines are pretty tough and the ones I have known don't use much oil at all. I would not be afraid of adding a turbo that is built for them. I'd be weary of going with a huge amount of boost, but if you keep it relatively tame, I think it would work out great.

Motorhead deals with the UPS guys- 0% to 100% to 0% all day long. Didn't know about the piston oil pi$$ers though. Big source of heat transfer, which adds new parameters to consider. I have a friend in L. Vegas who is asking these very questions. Service truck with a shop in the box. Every way out of Vegas is up hill and poor old Dorf needs some help. Thanks for input! :) Greg

Bought one new in 86 and had it for 14 years. Tough truck, but way underpowered... You can improve the performance by putting on a larger exhaust system with a larger air filter (improves back pressure), but you will still be way short of a stock CTD... ;)

My brother has an 86 6. 9, he put an ATS turbo on it shortly after he bought it. The thing still runs great, although not near as fast as my cummins. By the way it is the ATS out of Utah not Colorado. Also check out Hypermax, I see their ads in trailer life all the time.

Actually all 3 of the 6. 9's I have been inside of had piston oil jets. The early ones pressed into the block and the later ones were bolted on.

If you are going through one, I would look at going to the 7. 3 head bolts. Seems like the 6. 9 is a 7/16" and the 7. 3 is 1/2".

I never turbo'd mine but it certainly could have used one. Banks and ATS both had a setup.

My brother also has a 86 f-350 with a 6. 9. We put a turbo on it, turned the fuel all the way up, set the timing up a bit, air filter, exhaust and propane injection. The truck runs great, tows good with no egt problems will do doughnuts on dry tar, and the only thing to go so far is a headgasket. I agree without a turbo turning the fuel up is only going to make smoke.

BTW- Motorhead where did you get your blue cummins "C" thats listed in your signiture?:)

Cummins "C"

jlewis, I found the cast pot metal Blue "C" on a 5. 9 in a freightliner. It is about 2" tall and says cummins accross it. I am looking into finding them but not alot of luck so far. It was on the second valvecover of the six on a 12v. I am going to dig further on Cummins to see if I can get some more. Chris

My old 83 F-350 is on it's second 6. 9 and both have oil squirters, head gaskets and glow plug system are sore spots. A replacement glow plug controler is available and has worked well on mine. It's semi retired but still a solid truck.

there is an arcticle on the ford-diesel.com website that has a home made propane injection setup for the n/a 6. 9L diesel. seemed to work good. used a welding gas regulator and some microswitches and a electronic control valve. . ram air works too on it. .

there used to be headers available and may still be, Jardine made a set. They claimed about 1/2 the power increase of a turbo and cost around $300 if I remember right. JTMcC

My "handle" says it all. Was inspired by owning the very '86 Ferd 6. 9. Truck itself was tough but a dog especially at any elevation. Smoke? Good Gawd!!! Tried the Banks/ K&N oversize housing and filter, custom clean 3" exhaust and those helped but on flat ground at sea level and that's about it. Mine was one of those oil burners: quart per 300-400 miles. Joke was fill the oil, check the fuel. Thought about turbo but only after engine rebuild. Cost was going to be minimum 6K (rebuild + turbo). Friends that had Banks turbo's on theirs were very happy. The guys at Ford-Diesel website ( great bunch in the 6. 9 forum ) with turbo's were all very happy. Thought about Cummins conversion, much more cost. Then along comes this W350... ... ... . 1 ton, 4x4, club cab, low miles... .

Thank God for hidden blessings!

On the flip side one of my friends bought it and it's still going at 194K.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like the first bit of tweaking is going to be a new injector pump for it. See other post--(6. 9 needs pump)

Hey Wade, checkout www.dieselpage.com ( Diesel Injection Service ) for injector pump, glow plugs, gp controller, and other things for those trucks and ours for that matter. I think they are a link here at TDR already. Great to deal with!

Good luck to you and your friend.
