One week on my PDR HX-50/55 Hybrid.

I know half of ya are gonna think Im crazy, but has anyone heard or seen a setup to throw a flame out of a stack? If so how was it done?:D

Seen it done on a gasser. htey used two spark plugs and two coils connected up to a box with a switch inside to activate the coils.

Not sure how it could be done on a diesel

I saw it done on one of the Automotive Garage programs, but it was for a gasser. Like stg2500 said, using coils activated by switch attached to a spark plug. The switch also cut out the ignition coil, so that raw fuel was pushed into the exhaust in volume. I have no idea how this could be applied to a diesel.

More to the point I saw an 18 wheeler that shot flames from the stacks when I was at the Diesel Drags up in New Hampshire. It was a cool effect. I'm guessing that propane and an ignition source would work?

It will work as described above but keep in mind that the sparkplug needs to be about 6" from the tip and also be as near the center of the pipe so this may look funny sticking up in the air:confused:

cheers, Kevin

Girlfriend's grandpa said his older Cummins trucks he drove, without a turbo, would put out a 4 - 5" blue flame from the stacks that bent back in the wind if he was really weighted down and runnin' hard. Had the fueling turned up on them.

They were straight-piped too..... man I would have loved to seen it :D

Diesel Exhaust Injection

TMcKenzie you could plumb a Tee into the fuel line and run it straight into the exhaust just back of the turbo, and control it with a solenoid. Put a load on your engine, crank up the EGTs, and turn on the fuel. . . you might get enough heat to light it off.

You could do an old '70s trick people used to use on their Oldsmobile diesels by adding a gallon or two of gasoline at fillup time, that oughta do the trick. But it's not a good idea since it's hard on the injection pump and not the best thing for the engine.

I'm almost afraid to ask why you want to do this. I don't know about being associated with some sort of wild-eyed "Flames McKenzie" dude driving a smoke-belching, flaming-stacked Cummins Turbo Diesel  :p :p :p

a flaming Exhaustasarus?

if you have onboard air, try adding a small fuel cell for gasoline, and feed a gasoline/compressed air mix through some sort of "Y" nozzle into the base of the stack and light it off.

Were you dragging at Epping? I came by the small pack of Cummins engines that was there, and I seem to remember seeing a CT plate. I must admit that there was some drooling over a few of those rigs, both big and little :D  Anyway, "Showtime," the yellow rig with the flames, uses propane, but I'm not sure where he injects it. The 150' burnout, finished by picking up someone's cellphone was rather impressive, though.

Napalm, huh? 'Nuf said ;)

I used to run a Detroit Diesel 6-71 (non-turbo) in a White Road Boss back in the '70's that I had BOMBed with N-80 injectors and turned up to 2800 RPM's-- that thing would pour flames 2-3 feet out the single stack in the back when hammering on it. Was always getting called on the CB that "yer on fire", and that's how I happened to get my (old) handle of 'Wildfire'.

Going down the Interstate with flames coming out the stack always caused quite a commotion, and got plenty of unwanted attention from the gendarms.

I've seen it at the tractor/truck pulls. Real neat, but I don't think I want to do it.

Usually involves a very short exhaust and a solid black plume 30-40 feet into the air. :D

i been wanting to do this to, there is a company in truckin magazine that sells a kit that will shoot flames up to twenty feet it was around 100. 00

This may sound crazy but my buddies 12 valve does it, but you have to be on a street without street lights to see it. He is running a 10 plate, 370's and lazer cut delivery valves. It is a dull orange flame that shoots out about 4" from the end of the tail pipe.

We found this by driving my truck beside his, and he powering past me. We were listening for a popping sound we thought was coming from the exhaust. Instead we (I) see the flame as he rolls into it at about 35 mph. It is truly incredible, and he has a 4" exhaust and you can see a orangeish glow amongst the excessive smoke. What makes it easier to see is that he has a 4X4 with 35's. This puts the exhaust at a very good level to see whan it is beside my 2 wd.

I know it sounds crazy but you can see it if you are on a dark road.

I hope to be able to have the candle lit on my puller. I'm gonna have a short stack about 12 inches sticking out the hood. All the mod tractors shoot flames, of course it's easy to see at night. I want to do it just for a crowd pleaser and to make the gassers mad.
