Were you dragging at Epping? I came by the small pack of Cummins engines that was there, and I seem to remember seeing a CT plate. I must admit that there was some drooling over a few of those rigs, both big and little :D  Anyway, "Showtime," the yellow rig with the flames, uses propane, but I'm not sure where he injects it. The 150' burnout, finished by picking up someone's cellphone was rather impressive, though.

Napalm, huh? 'Nuf said ;)

That was the truck! Epping was the place! . . and that was us, a half dozen of us goats and one red Ford.

It is impressive to watch the big 18's smoke all eight drive wheels, isn't it? You're right about the rigs, too. Chrome plated dumps, more instruments, radios, and switches than a 747.

I'd guess the propane is for show, but if it uses up the black smoke, I'd be all for it.

Cool! NOW I wish I'd struck up a conversation. Maybe I'll eventually make it to one of the wrench days sometime this spring Oo.

Scott,

You're always welcome. We have a wrench day firing up on the 22nd followed by a trip to F1 in Boston the following day. We're looking for people on the F1 trip, if we get enough we'll reserve the track to ourselves.

PM me your email address and I'll add you to our mailing list.

Got a thread going on in the '48-60 section on:

www.ford-trucks.com

on doing this on gassers.

Here is a pretty cool solid state ignitor circuit from the thread:

The "555" is a timer chip. The module is usually refered to as a "brown grommet module. "

Exhaust Flame

The old (really really old) 220 Cummins would throw flames out the exhaust, especially if you put a vice grip on the fuel return line!

Oooops, givin my age away!

Ive seen it

there is a guy up by muncie In that pulled his 12 valve ad it would shoot a flame out his staks. I think it ewas something with the turbo??? But it looked like the hot farm stock tractoes that pull. Justin

Any out come of this one?

I really want to do this, but don't want to put an ignition source near the top of my stacks to get it to work,, I'd rather inject fuel near the manifold.

Only fear I have would be if I inject fuel pre-turbo I might mess-up the turbo.

Idea's ?

????????????

Definately inject after the turbo.

Won't #2 just create more smoke and not ignite?

If so will we have to inject gas or propane?

How will the injection process be able to simulate the actual level of exhaust and engine RPM?

Might look rather odd with a ten foot tall propane flame shooting out the stacks of truck idling through the parking lot.

Sometimes my mind works in strange ways:-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf

How COOL would that be, though :D If you get 10 feet at idle, imagine what would happen going down the interstate  It would sure be an easy way to fend off tailgaters

Couldn't one run the wiring and propane lines through the bottom of the stacks so that it is hidden, and place the ignitor about a foot from the top of the stacks so it is also hidden? Then rig a switch on the go pedal so that the stacks would only ignite when the pedal is partially on. This way, you'd also be burning the black smoke as it mixed with the ambient oxygen. I'd think that our trucks have enough O2 left in the stacks to ignite the propane as it passes by. That way, depending on how much smoke your truck actually produces, you could have a bigger flame with more throttle.

Just a thought (this could get dangerous :p).

I was with the NE crew at the Diesel drags at Epping and can't wait for the next one. That rig shooting flames out the stacks was wild. I believe it was propane, I think I even heard the driver talking to someone about it. I saw it at one point in the pits with engine off, and flames running out the stacks. The flames alone were clean with no smoke, with engine running and smoking they looked awesome!

Gentleman. I spoke with the driver/builder of the yellow semi shooting flames at Epping NH.

He injects liquid propane (vs. gaseous propane) using a burner and orfice setup much the same as a hot air balloon. he ignites his mixture using a piezo electric igniter. if anyone needs more info i can give him a call. :)
