Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fleetguard makes air filter change

Picked up a new air filter today from Cummins N. W. There wasn't a foam pad on the bottom of the pleated paper. Asked the parts person, they said Fleetguard , no longer puts the foam on the 94 thru 02 filters on the Dodge cummins application. Don't know if this will be a good or bad idea. Maybe just to save some money.

I got a Puralator replacement... It has the foam pad, though my OEM filter did NOT.

As far as I know this change was made a little bit ago. The foam pad was only for the Dodge application. It was not present on the 5. 9 applications in other trucks. I think it may have been present to help with noise supression on the Dodge application much like the silencer ring, that is just a guess. As far as the foam pad I feel it is restrictive and unnecessary. JMHO

I think so, too. The foam doesn't look like it would offer much filtration, and I seem to have less turbo whine now. .

I just bought a new Napa Gold filter to put in while I was cleaning the AFE. It has the foam on it also.
