I stopped by the local Cummins dealer to pickup an oil filter, I asked for an LF3894. The parts guy went back to the storeroom and returned in a few moments and asked where I got that number and what I was going to use it on. I told him that I had gotten the number off of the web and that it was going on a 2001 Dodge CTD. He looks in his book and goes and gets an LF3937 and tells me that it is the new number for the Dodges. When I got back to work I looked in a current filter interchange book and could find nothing, I did a search on the TDR when I got home and found nothing on that filter so I did a web search and found one company that had it listed as "non Dodge" ISB application.

I have not installed it and will not, but I just hate it when someone will sell you "anything" to get you out the door. That filter may be just fine to use, but thats not the point. This started out as a question and turned into a rant, sorry.

Go check out Geno's..... They know your truck and stand behind what they sell. Look at the 4 2 1 package (4 oil filters, 2 fuel and 1 air) at a package price.

Ignorance is rampant and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

It is refreshing when you do find someone who is professional and helpful.

3894 or 3959

3894 is the one you want, you can go with 3959 if you want to save a few bucks.

If there is a new part number I haven't heard or seen it yet.

I just bought a couple filters. LF3894 is the Fleetguard with stratapore media. Seems to work fine for me. I believe I got the number from the fleetguard website.

I just went to a Case\IH dealer and asked for a oil filter for a 5. 9l engine and it cost less than half of a mopar. (sorry I forgot the part numer!)

Forget these idiot's.....

You gotta insist on what you want, and if you get the deer in the headlights stare or any other BS, walk out. I'm tired of dealing with moron's like this.

I'm buying the Fleeguard filters I want from a local big rig dealer who doesn't give a rip what the application is for..... I pay $6. 70 ea. for LF3894's when I buy a case of 12. Otherwise, $7. 05 ea.

I use Purolator L-44422( availiable at Pep Boy's on the west coast). They appear to be a bit taller with a bit more filter area.

Also approved by the reply above.

Cummins Parts Dept

I just purchased my filters from Cummins.

I didn't ask for a particular # and 3894 is what the parts guy gave me

Been down this road before....

The local Petro-Canada dealer deals in Fleetguard stuff. One day when I was in paying my bill I mentioned something about all his stock-he pulled a 3937 off the shelf and told me he had tons of filters for my truck. I told him that I didn't think that # was right-either 3935 or 3894. He insisted that 3937 was cataloged for it... . so maybe a Fleetguard error? Or a supersession coming up? I dunno-he's still sitting on his 3937's-I went to Cummins and bought 3894's... .

... . and the 1st time I bought them there one of the parts guys told me that unless I was running synthetic oil there was no need to run the Stratapores... . . Of course he reassured me I wouldn't hurt anything by using them-probably helped to that decision by the fact I had the death grip on the 3 I'd picked up off the shelf already :D .

Hey let's face it-lots worse filters to run than a 3935-but in my mind I'd rather pay the extra few bucks for a premium filter-this truck will be with me for a very long time. So once again the TDR comes through!

I did a little more research on this deal, even the thread size is wrong..... The 3937 that he sold me has a 1 1/8-16 and our trucks use a 1-16 it is also called a "high flow" filter. I can't wait to educate this "parts dude". I would normaly figure that anyone can make a mistake but for the fact that he told me flatly that this was the new part # for the Dodge.

I'm sure glad that I didn't have my truck's guts spilled all over the driveway before I found out!!

Man it's great to have a place like this to help figure these things out.

My Dad was sold one of these 3937 filter. I told him I never heard of that part number and to get the 3552 or the 3894. He had to go back to town and get a filter that would fit... ... My sister also did the same thing. Nobody ever listens to me.
