My transmission runs hot towing at low speeds and when backing. It looks as if this system may help. I have looked at ways of turning on the main engine fan manually to augment the air flow over the transmission cooler, but could not find a way.

Has anyone put a Flex-A-Lite Transmission Cooler in your transmission cooling system? How well does it work?

Chuck

I put an H7B (recommended by BK) on mine with a 1k cfm fan. Works great.

If stop and go I turn fan on from cab. If backing 5er I turn on fan. Anytime I feel the transmission could go over 200* I turn the fan on.

Observations: It keeps the pan at 150*. 5er (13k) and locked the T/C will add 10* as it goes through the transmission. 5er and unlocked the T/C will add as much as 50* as it goes through the transmission.

The key is the fan KEEPS the pan (input fluid to the transmission) at 150* so the transmission can work hard and still have cool fluid input.

I would do it again as a mod.

I too have had my transmission heating in stop and go traffic. I am surprised more people that have these tight torque converters do not post about this problem more often. I have bought this derale kit and will be installing it next weekend. It sounds good, I hope to have good results.

I have this fan installed under the frame, left side. It ran on a thermostat for 5 years kicked on at 180*. I put it on a switch and when backing or stop & go traffic have never seen more than 160 in the pan. It will cool it down if hot. Sometimes on the interstate in slow traffic you forget and it is 165 or so before you see it; it will bring it down 5-10 degrees.

I think the key is 1/2" ports, good fluid flow so the transmission fluid does not see the cooler as a restirction, pleanty of cooling capacity (ie surface area), and a fan.

Remember when it gets cold that the transmission cooler does not hinder fluid flow either.

I think that is why DTT recommends the H7B flat plate cooler.

Just a thought,

I have on on my rig and it helped alot, I tow a 12000lbs 5th wheel ,The fan will run for a short time after stoping the engine on hot days even when I am not towing but it is only cooling the fluid in the cooler since the trans. is not pumping fluid when the engine is off.
